In-House Counsel

The American Federation of Musicians of the US and Canada, AFL-CIO/CLC, an international union representing more than 60,000 musicians throughout the United States and Canada, seeks an In-House Counsel with 2-5 years of experience to start on or about June 2026 or at the successful candidate’s earliest availability. 

As part of the AFM’s legal department, in-house counsel is responsible for handling federal court litigation on behalf of musicians working under AFM contracts, representation of the AFM before the National Labor Relations Board and other administrative agencies, handling grievance arbitrations, assisting with collective bargaining, and providing legal advice in connection with organizing, personnel issues, and other matters. 

Applicants should have a demonstrable commitment to the labor movement and strong critical thinking, research, and writing skills. The work involves regular interaction with international and local officers, staff and AFM members and requires the exercise of independent judgment. Applicants should be prepared to assume substantial responsibility from the start.

The position is based in the AFM’s New York City Times Square headquarters. Office hours are flexible. Applicants must live in or near the New York metropolitan area. The AFM’s office is conveniently close to Port Authority Mid-Town Bus Terminal, Penn Station, Moynihan Train Hall and Grand Central. Some travel outside the New York metro area will be required.

Starting salary is between $100,000 and $120,000, based on years of experience. The AFM provides a competitive benefits package with excellent health insurance, defined benefit pension plan and ample paid time off.
