Union Organizer
(Beginner to Experienced)

Based in Baltimore, MD

 

Local 7 is a majority black union of hotel, casino, and food services workers in Baltimore and across Maryland. We fight for economic justice, racial justice, the expansion of immigrant rights, queer and trans rights -- and for a world in which we are all free.

We are dedicated to training long term leaders of the Labor Movement. We are open to training organizers of all skill/experience levels, so long as you are dedicated to building the movement for social justice and developing your leadership skills. We have the following training slots:

  • Union Apprenticeships: 1-6 month training program, no benefits. The timeline is flexible if you are a student looking for a summer opportunity.
  • Union Organizer: full time, benefited position for applicants who have previous movement/organizing experience; experience does not need to be with a labor union.

Responsibilities include:

  • Build worker organizing committees in unionized and not-yet-unionized workplaces
  • Recruit, lead, and train workplace leaders and volunteer organizers 
  • Coordinate and lead meetings and trainings
  • Organize actions, such as picket lines and rallies
  • Work with union members to fight workplace issues through direct actions, grievances and contract campaigns
  • Maintain worker lists and produce flyers, written communications, etc.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Dedication to building the social justice movement and workers’ political power
  • Experience building unity among diverse groups
  • Experience with campus, workplace, or community organizing
  • Willingness to work long and flexible hours; work includes evening and weekend hours on a regular basis
  • Willingness to engage in conflict, have hard conversations, and disagree (sometimes with the bosses, sometimes with each other)
  • Commitment to your own growth and leadership development
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team of leaders and organizers
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills as well as basic computer skills
  • Must have a valid driver's license and own car

Compensation:

  • Organizing Apprenticeship Program: 
    • $850/week; additional food stipend/pay for use of your car depending on the assignment
    • This short-term training position is a non-benefited position. 
  • Union Organizer:
    • Annual Salary: $50,000 to $63,000
    • Benefits: UNITE HERE Local 7’s comprehensive and generous benefits package includes: $126/week car allowance; Up to $1,800/year car insurance reimbursement; Fully paid single or family health insurance (you pay $0 from your check); Fully paid Prescription Coverage; Fully paid Dental and Vision Insurance; Short and Long-Term Disability and Life Insurance; Pension contributions (15.5% of your salary); Optional 401k; Generous sick days, personal days, vacation days, and holidays; Cell phone & laptop provided

This base salary range represents the minimum and maximum end of the salary range for this position. Not all applicants will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will depend on multiple factors, which may include candidates' prior work experience, skills, training, and/or other factors and qualifications.
