Organizer
Based in Washington, DC
Pride At Work is the national organizing hub and official AFL-CIO constituency group for LGBTQIA+ union members and workers. We are a membership-based organization with chapters across the United States and work closely in partnership with labor unions and the AFL-CIO at the national and local levels.
This is a full-time, in-person position at our downtown Washington, DC office. The Organizer is accountable to and supervised by the Executive Director.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead, develop, and execute strategic campaigns that build LGBTQIA+ worker power
- Identify, recruit, train, and inspire LGBTQIA+ worker leaders using the organizing model of unionism
- Cultivate strong Pride At Work chapters, providing support, resources, and coaching that set them up for success
- Develop and maintain membership and chapter infrastructure and operations, including managing the membership database
- Create and roll out campaign toolkits for use by our chapters, members, and allied organizations
- Develop and strengthen Pride At Work’s relationships with AFL-CIO State Federations/CLCs and labor unions
Qualifications
- Understanding of labor union operations and values in the U.S. through direct experience as a union member or staff
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in labor, community, or political organizing with an understanding of organizing fundamentals, including power analysis, worker/member assessments, and developing leaders
- Competency in LGBTQIA+ issues and history; continually learning as our community’s language and understanding of ourselves evolves; holding a racial justice and intersectionality lens on everything we do
- Comfort and experience with making phone calls, canvassing, planning and facilitating meetings, recruiting people to become members and volunteers, interacting and building relationships with all types of people, representing the organization in new spaces, and public speaking
- Ability to effectively navigate complex organizations and politically sensitive environments
- Ability to anticipate next steps and challenges, adapt to rapidly changing situations, and solve problems creatively
- Computer and smartphone proficiency, including Google Workspaces, Zoom, email, and internet applications
- Experience with at least one membership database/CRM platform, such as Action Network, Action Builder, or VAN
- Strong project management skills; Excellent attention to detail and follow-through; Clear, thorough and timely documentation of work
- Excellent listening, interpersonal, and written communication skills
- Ability to do all of the above without the use of AI
- Ability to travel on a regular basis as needed and for extended periods of time by plane, train, and vehicle with overnight stays in hotels
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends, as needed, as the organization has chapters and members across the continental United States, Alaska and Hawai’i, and represents members who work non-traditional hours; Evenings and weekends are expected during election seasons, conferences, and conventions
Gross annual salary of $70,000 – $75,000 per year, depending on experience. Generous benefits, including fully paid employee health insurance, dental and vision; 401(k) with employer match.
