New York Professional Nurses Union
Senior / Labor Representative / Internal Organizer
Based in New York City / Upper East Side, NY
(Primarily On-Site)
Support Nurses. Enforce the Contract. Build Power – Together!
The New York Professional Nurses Union (NYPNU) is an independent, nurse-led union representing 1,500 RNs, NPs, and PAs across three hospitals in Manhattan. We were founded over 40 years ago by bedside nurses who believed in building a union that put patient care, professional standards, and members’ voices at the center.
Today, we continue that tradition, driven by a member-first culture, tight-knit team collaboration, and a commitment to the organizing model in all we do. At NYPNU, every member is the union. This role is about helping nurses turn their individual concerns into collective action that improves both working conditions and patient care.
We are seeking a Labor Representative who is deeply passionate about the labor movement and ready to help nurses enforce their contract, solve problems before they escalate, and grow collective power in the workplace. Applicants with significant, relevant experience, typically four or more years, may be considered for a Senior Labor Representative position, with responsibilities and compensation commensurate with their expertise.
What You’ll Do
This is a member-facing role for someone who loves listening to worker concerns, engaging with the membership, and proactively enforcing the contract through an organizing lens. You’ll be part of a highly supportive staff team and report to the Associate Executive Director.
This is not a desk job. The role requires a strong, consistent presence in the hospitals, with regular weekly visits across all three Manhattan sites to meet with members, support delegates, and stay grounded in the day-to-day realities of the workplace.
This role is not just about resolving issues, it’s about helping members build the confidence, structure, and collective action needed to win lasting change.
Your Core Responsibilities
Issue Intake & Contract Enforcement
Respond to day-to-day member issues with a problem-solving and organizing lens, including but not limited to:
- Coordinate delegate representation
- Provide contract interpretation and education
- Monitor and enforce contract compliance through issue intake, CBA violation reports, and escalate to grievance process, labor-management meetings and/or field action as needed
- Maintain thorough records and utilize grievance handling software
Organizing & Leadership Development
- Identify and develop member leaders across units and shifts
- Support and strengthen delegate structure and effectiveness
- Conduct one-on-ones and build relationships that move members from concern to action and up the Ladder of Engagement
- Assist in developing campaigns and organizing strategies
Worksite Presence
- Lead new member orientations, unit meetings, and one-on-one conversations
- Maintain strong visibility across worksites and support internal organizing efforts
Strategic Casework
- Identify patterns in member concerns and workplace issues
- Gather and analyze data to inform campaigns and enforcement strategies
- Advance workplace solutions that strengthen both working conditions and patient care
Support Bargaining & Internal Organizing
- Strengthen member engagement through education, organizing, and leadership development
- Work with Contract Action Team to build strength, mobilize members, and execute field plan to win strong contracts
Communications & Digital Engagement
- Write effective, accessible communications that mobilize members and deepen understanding of contract rights and union priorities
- Design and implement member outreach tools (e.g., surveys, materials, campaign resources)
- Manage and contribute to NYPNU’s social media presence to support campaigns, highlight member activity, and strengthen engagement
The responsibilities listed above reflect the core of the role, but this announcement is not a full job description and shouldn’t be interpreted as limiting the scope of work.
