Temporary Organizer

Job Title: Temporary Organizer
Classification: Temporary at-will employment (non-union)
Duration: No more than a one-year period
Supervisor: Campaign Project Manager
Location: Florida (extensive travel required)

The Florida Education Association (FEA) is the largest association of professional employees and the largest labor union in the Southeast, representing more than 120,000 members. FEA members include teachers, education staff professionals, higher education faculty and graduate assistants, retirees, education students, and early career educators. FEA represents the professional and working interests of its members and plays a prominent role in shaping state policies that affect public schools. FEA is a merged state association affiliated with both the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

POSITION SUMMARY: 
The Organizer is responsible for building strong relationships with union members, supporting organizing campaigns, and strengthening workplace engagement. This role focuses on building worksite leadership, recruiting new members, mobilizing existing members, and advancing the union’s mission through collective action, education, and advocacy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred; High School Diploma required.
  • Successful experience working with teachers and Education Staff Professional locals
  • At least three years of successful organizing experience.
  • Multilingual skills are highly desired.
  • Demonstrated competence in oral and written communications.
  • Experience with and understanding of professional education organization programs and services at local, state, and national levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and drive projects independently.
  • Successful experience multi-task under tight deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to learn new, proprietary software programs and/or organizing tools.
  • Capacity to work closely with other staff.
  • Skill in using Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel).
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Florida driver’s license.

Must be able to pass background check.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Build strong representative structures in assigned locals and track organizing efforts. 
  2. Build and maintain relationships with current and prospective union members. 
  3. Conduct workplace outreach, including site visits, meetings, and one-on-one conversations.
  4. Identify, recruit, and develop member leaders and volunteers. 
  5. Support organizing campaigns, contract campaigns, and collective actions.
  6. Educate members on their rights, benefits, and union initiatives.
  7. Assist in planning and executing meetings, trainings, and events. 
  8. Track organizing activities, membership data, and campaign progress. 
  9. Collaborate with staff and leadership to develop organizing strategies. 
  10. Respond to member concerns and help connect them with appropriate resources.
  11. Assist with local and program evaluation.
  12. Maintain a positive relationship with other organizations and groups within assigned areas.
  13. Maintain a continuous positive relationship with local leaders and coordinating council members within the unit.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned by the Campaign Project Manager or designee.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Acknowledge and support the advancement of FEA’s vision, mission, and strategic goals.
  2. Identify, contribute to, and support new opportunities to advance FEA’s vision, mission, and strategic goals.
  3. Perform all work assignments in a manner that effectively and efficiently utilizes FEA resources.
  4. Contribute to and support the development and implementation of departmental and
  5. interdepartmental programs and services.
  6. Perform all duties, responsibilities, and assignments within the guidelines outlined in the
  7. FSO/FEA Collective Bargaining Agreement and in accordance with FEA Policies and Procedures.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  1. Maintain a working cell phone for FEA business communication including text messages.
  2. Personal vehicle for business travel. 

Compensation & Benefits: This position is eligible for up to 4% of annual salary 401(k) match and medical health insurance and will receive a cell phone. Competitive salary based on experience.
