Director of Data and Technology

POSITION TITLE: Director of Data and Technology
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Executive Director

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of MNA’s Executive Director, the Director of Data and Technology will work collaboratively with the management team, MNA staff, elected member leaders, and rank-and-file members to support new organizing drives, contract bargaining campaigns, internal organizing, and political campaigns. Close collaboration is required to help make strategic, informed, data-driven decisions.

This position is primarily responsible for leading all aspects of the union’s data and technology workflow and is responsible for supporting the analytics and targeting strategies needed maximize the impact of MNA’s resources. This position also provides basic technology support for end users, ensuring the smooth operation of hardware, software, and peripheral systems to support staff as they carry out their daily functions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a system administrator, managing and maintaining our CRM tools and procedures for dispensing, tracking, and auditing organizational data to ensure consistent and accurate data, while maintaining data security throughout the organization. 
  • Produce ad-hoc queries, reports, and projects as needed for interdepartmental projects.
  • Serve as a campaign thought partner to connect campaign strategies and tactics and ensure participation is captured through data. 
  • Serve as the liaison to the Board of Directors for all matters related to data and technology, policy analysis, organizational planning, and board and staff development.
  • Collaborate with departments to drive, develop, and implement the strategic vision for MNA’s Data and Technology systems.
  • Collaborate with the management team to ensure the intelligent use of data to influence campaign and programmatic decision-making.
  • Develop and provide post-analysis reports to use for future campaign planning.
  • Develop dashboards, API’s, and regular reports on key performance indicators (KPIs) for internal, external, and political organizing campaigns.
  • Manage data quality, standardization, and clean-up across multiple databases, including timely uploads, syncing, and data reporting.
  • Review, update, and develop technology policies and procedures, as well as practice standards across the organization. 
  • Conduct IT, software, and data tool audits to identify integration gaps, reduce redundancies, and improve operational efficiencies, that are comprehensive, and cross-functional.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors and managed service providers to ensure delivery of high-quality and cost-effective solutions. 
  • Provide the initial orientation to new staff on membership systems, data management tools, and organizing tools, including ThruText, ActionBuilder, UnionWare, EveryAction, and others.
  • Provide ongoing training and coaching (individual and group) for organizers, researchers, elected member leaders, and rank-and-file union members to increase comfort and effectiveness in using data tools.
  • Develop and manage a budget that ensures strong stewardship of members’ dues.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

SUPERVISES: Data Engineer

QUALIFICATIONS 
Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s degree is preferred. Equivalent work experience will be considered.

Experience: 

  • Five years or more of managerial experience is preferred. 
  • Knowledge of labor unions is required.
  • Must have comprehensive experience in database management and creating data pipelines using various sources. 
  • Ability to manage, review, and audit data integrations, software, IT, data tools, phones, and computers. 
  • Must be a highly organized and detail-oriented individual with strong project management skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor staff is preferred.
  • Experience managing a departmental budget is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong understanding of technology, including hardware and software. 
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience. 
  • Political, union, or community organizing experience in a fast-paced campaign environment, either in the field or in a data-related role, is required.
  • Organizing experience and ability to anticipate campaign needs, generate timelines that are synced with political, internal, and external organizing campaign plans.
  • Required proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and strong skills in managing CRM’s such as UnionWare.
  • A strong working knowledge of networking and office automation, including cloud systems, with in-depth experience in all phases of LAN/WAN/desktop security and telecommunications.
  • Experience with data visualization tools like Google’s Looker Studio 
  • Experience with BigQuery in CTA’s, PAD, or DNCs, Pheonix, VAN, LAN, and Looker Studio.

Salary: 
A salary range of $112,407 – $159,991, dependent on experience, with generous benefits including defined benefit pension, 401K matching, 100% employer-paid single and family health insurance coverage, 25 vacation days, 12 sick, and 3 personal days, along with 12 paid holidays annually.
