Job Title: Immigration Program Specialist 
Department: Development and Strategic Initiatives – DSI 
Reports To: Senior Program Manager – Gateway to Citizenship Initiative 
Location: Kern County – Hybrid/Field-based

Salary Range: $5,500 –$5,800 per month 
Status: Exempt, Temporary position until September 30, 2026

Position Summary: 
The Immigration Program Specialist will play a vital role in directly supporting the Senior Manager – Gateway to Citizenship Initiative (GCI) in coordinating and supporting the planning and expansion of GCI Program services in Kern County. During the duration of this temporary role they will work with members, community allies, UDW’s nonprofit partner the United Resource Center, and staff to build immigrant power, connect members and their families in Kern County to services, lead education and advocacy and train-the-trainer workshops, and assist with advocating for immigrant justice policies at the local, state, and federal levels. 

The Immigration Program Specialist will be responsible for identifying member leaders to continue to grow and help lead GCI Program educational and advocacy services in the long term. They will work closely with other staff members, volunteers, and community partners. 

Key Responsibilities: 
Program Development & Leadership: 

  • Exercises independent judgement and discretion to identify and implement systems to support members with immigration-related needs (DACA renewals, naturalization, TPS, Know Your Rights trainings, Train-the-Trainer trainings, Civic engagement, and legislative trainings). 
  • Advises the Senior Program Manager in developing a network of legal and community partners to provide services and referrals. 

Member Engagement: 

  • Identify immigrant member leaders and support their leadership development through trainings and campaign work. 
  • Develop workshops, clinics, and outreach events to engage immigrant members and their families in Kern County. 
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with UDW members and assist with referrals to UDW’s partnered non-profit. 
  • Conduct outreach to immigrant populations to refer to UDW programs including the Community College Project, Community Resiliency and Climate Justice Programs, and other leadership or educational opportunities 

Advocacy & Campaigns: 

  • Determines priorities and methods of approach for the Senior Program Manager and support local and countywide immigration campaigns in alignment with UDW’s values and priorities. 
  • Work with the communications team to develop member stories and materials to amplify immigration issues. 
  • Mobilize members for rallies, lobby visits, and advocacy days focused on immigrant rights. 
  • Supports field engagement efforts including door knocking, participating in political campaigns, and other outreach activities as assigned 

Training & Education: 

  • Develop and deliver educational materials and curriculum on immigration topics, rights, and services. 
  • Assist in developing and delivering educational materials and curriculum on civic engagement, labor rights, immigration, and legislative. 
  • Train union staff and member leaders on immigrant justice and Know Your Rights trainings.

Internal Collaboration: 

  • Work with Organizing, Political, Communications, and Legal teams to integrate immigration services into broader union efforts as well as assist in building immigrant justice coalitions for UDWs political priorities in Kern. 
  • Track and report on immigration-related metrics, outcomes, and member engagement. 
  • Collaborate closely with the Senior Program Manager on a variety of initiatives, including curriculum planning and development, coordinating and assisting with program-related projects, and supporting the execution of tasks aligned with departmental goals and responsibilities. 
  • Assist with DSI department projects including attending DSI events and perform other duties as assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of work in this job classification. 
  • Make referrals to other DSI Programs and assist in development and integration of DSI Programs. 

Qualifications: 
Preferred but not required: 

  • At least 2–4 years of experience in program coordination, preferably with immigrant communities. 
  • Deep understanding of immigration issues and the unique challenges facing undocumented and mixed-status families. 
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) required. Other languages (e.g., Tagalog, Vietnamese, Pashto, and Dari) a plus. 
  • Proven ability to build trust and relationships with diverse communities. 
  • Experience planning and leading training or community events. 
  • Commitment to social, racial, and economic justice. 
  • Willingness to work evenings/weekends as needed and travel within California. 

Preferred: 

  • Familiarity with the labor movement or experience working in a union environment. 
  • Experience collaborating with immigration attorneys, nonprofits, or legal service providers. 
  • Knowledge of immigration processes like DACA, TPS, Naturalization, Work permit, etc. 

Requirements: 

  • Ability to work from UDW’s office three days/per week (subject to changes based on organizational needs) 
  • Some travel within Southern California is required (about 10-20% a month) with a reliable vehicle. 
  • Valid driver's license
