Law Clerk

University Professional & Technical Employees (“UPTE”) is a dynamic and growing member-run, statewide union representing over 20,000 University of California technical, research, and health care professionals. 

Job Title: Law Clerk 
Hours: Part-time or full-time during summer; qualified candidates might continue part-time in fall. 
Location: Remote, but if you desire to work out of an office, we have office space available in Berkeley,
and possibly other cities in California. 
Starting Wage: $30 – 45/hour, dependent on experience

DUTIES: 

  • Support the work of General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel in handling charges we have filed with the California Public Employment Relations Board. 
  • Support our advocate who works solely on PERB matters pertaining to organizing.
  • Support field staff and member leaders pursuing contractual grievances and arbitrations. 
  • Opportunity to not only do legal research and writing, but also to interview workers when taking declarations.
  • Support our Research Department in pursuing enforcement of the Public Records Act. 
  • Support staff and member leaders in assisting with research for negotiations, lobbying and publicity about UC's corporate ties. 
  • Help our work in developing educational materials regarding the legal rights and duties of UPTE and its members.

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Enrolled in law school in the US. 
  • Some knowledge about unions, preferably a labor law course. 
  • If living outside of California, ability to work hours convenient to Californians. 
  • Ability to write in a clear, compelling manner. 
  • Experience with research databases and methods. 
  • Ability to thrive under deadlines. 
  • Proven ability to work with diverse groups of people.
