The California Federation of Labor Unions, AFL-CIO represents over 1,300 affiliate unions in California that collectively represent 2.3 million union members in trucking, retail, hospitality, service sector jobs, janitorial, construction, health care, local and state government, education, arts and entertainment, warehousing and logistics, manufacturing, and a variety of other sectors.

Under the supervision of the Chief of Staff, the Social Media Manager will increase visibility of the Federation and affiliate unions’ work on social media, produce and manage communications across all media platforms, and support the digital communications needs of affiliate unions and central labor councils across the state. 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
CONTENT CREATION 

  • Create all social media content for the Federation’s campaign for guardrails on Artificial Intelligence, all other major campaigns (organizing, mobilization, political, legislative, etc.)—including original content ideas and comprehensive digital campaign strategies;
  • Closely monitor news coverage and online social media trends and hashtags, identify opportunities to create content around current trends, and develop relevant, engaging social media content in response; 
  • Produce content for social media at rallies and actions, large events and conferences, pressers, etc;
  • Translate long-form emails, newsletters, press releases, and other Federation work into digestible content online;
  • Interview workers and gather stories, quotes, photos, and videos and spotlight worker experiences to connect individual issues to broader campaigns;
  • Assist with conception of online campaign branding and graphics, signage, messaging, and slogans.

SOCIAL MEDIA MANGEMENT 

  • Create and manage a content calendar for all social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, BlueSky, Twitter, Threads) and produce daily social media content (content series, text posts, graphics, videos/reels, memes, some paid advertising) that maximizes visibility, reach, and engagement;
  • Develop campaign social media toolkits for external distribution to effectively mobilize supporters and boost campaign visibility;
  • Communicate the Federation’s public statements and positions on all social media platforms;
  • Engage with supporters and followers on all social media accounts and respond to questions, comments, and direct messages promptly, and monitor engagement on all platforms;
  • Maintain updated social media profiles and stay updated on platform changes, tools, and best practices. 

TRAININGS & SUPPORT 

  • Help develop content and promote affiliate unions’ social media content, including for contract fights, strikes, and other mobilization campaigns; 
  • Support affiliate unions and central labor councils with rapid response communications e.g. social media outreach for events and actions, strike updates, public statements, etc.;
  • Design and deliver capacity-building training for social media and other digital tools for affiliates and central labor councils.

OTHER

  • Ensure consistent visuals, branding, voice and messaging across social media accounts; 
  • Proof and copyedit communications materials to ensure they are accurate, use correct spelling and grammar, maintain a consistent tone, and communicate core messages and values;
  • Track the Federation’s online reach and evaluate digital engagement metrics;
  • Provide staffing support at actions, picket lines, press conferences, media avails, rallies, and all other Federation events, conferences and meetings;

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE 

  • Experience developing and managing social media campaigns and hands-on experience with content management; 
  • Deep knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, BlueSky, Twitter, Threads) and how to maximize reach and visibility on each; 
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to distill complex information into concise social media content and impactful public messaging;
  • Creativity and strong producing, editing, and digital storytelling skills;
  • Basic video editing and photo/video shooting skills;
  • Ability to take initiative, produce original content ideas, organize, and execute daily social media content;
  • Ability to complete time-sensitive, rapid response assignments as needed in a fast-paced environment;
  • Comfortable conducting interviews and engaging with workers;
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and comfortable working independently with excellent organizational and time-management skills;
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for meetings, events and mobilizations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated work on social media for labor, political, and/or progressive campaigns in California;
  • Prior experience working in, or knowledge of, the labor movement;
  • Bilingual (written and/or verbal) English/Spanish candidates.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is a union job represented by the Pacific Media Workers Guild, Local 39521. The annual salary range for a full-time position is $75,000 to $101,290, dependent on experience. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Part-time and full-time opportunities available. Must be based in California, remote work options available.
