The battery industry in Northern Nevada presents a unique opportunity to ensure the creation and growth of good family and community-sustaining jobs. The Nevada Organizer will be responsible for building an active and engaged community, labor, and environmental coalition to win community benefits agreements that ensure worker and community needs are prioritized in the development of publicly subsidized projects. The role will be mostly performed in-person across Northern Nevada, including Reno-Sparks, Carson City, and occasionally areas extending east to Fallon. In addition, the Organizer will coordinate virtually with colleagues and coalition partners across the U.S. Non-field work for this position will be remote; in the future, hybrid work including some time at a shared office may be required. The initial appointment duration will be 2 years, with opportunity for extension pending progress and programmatic needs.
What You’ll Do ─ Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work closely with JMA's team of campaigners and researchers, contribute to developing and implementing strategy to achieve campaign goals
- Alongside our union partners, develop and drive JMA’s field coordination efforts in Northern Nevada to organize community members and local groups to win community benefits campaigns with Nevada-based companies
- Build relationships with the local political leaders, residents, social organizations, faith groups and churches, community meetings and meeting spaces, union locals, etc. in the area by carrying out community power mapping and/or asset mapping with the goal of building grassroots power and infrastructure to win the campaign
- Develop substantial 1:1 relationships through regular meetings and consistent follow-up with key stakeholders, especially workers and grass roots leaders; including developing and running monthly coalition meetings
- Moving coalition partners, workers, stakeholders and others to take action, participate in the campaign and engage in the work in ways that are deep and meaningful.
- Conduct survey research to better understand community and worker needs and identify and develop leaders
- Help strengthen JMA’s organizing program by producing organizing materials such as raps, worker lists and assessment tools materials, and facilitating trainings for other organizers and JMA staff
- Effectively use tools, data, tracking and work planning to demonstrate engagement and interaction with coalition partners and workers
- Act as an effective spokesperson for JMA’s vision, work, and campaigns and represent JMA in high-stakes meetings with decision makers
- Contribute to JMA’s organizational development, for example assisting with fundraising, providing peer evaluations, and participating in JMA staff committees (not to exceed 10% of time)
About you ─ Required Qualifications:
- A demonstrable commitment to racial, gender, social and economic justice and experience centering such issues within an organizing context
- At least one year of full-time experience organizing with workers, political campaigns, community groups, and/or unions; external labor organizing experience in an industrial environment is a plus
- Knowledge of and experience working within the political landscape and/or within diverse coalition spaces in Nevada is strongly preferred
- Familiarity with workforce development, trades training programs, labor unions, policy is a plus;
- Strong communication and social skills including the ability to develop new contacts and build transformational relationships with workers and organization leaders
- Ability to build and sustain authentic and productive working relationships with colleagues across race and other group identities, including JMA employees as well as external partners
- Ability to continually assess and deepen the commitment of key stakeholders, and workers through regular 1:1s, thoughtful asks, and securing of commitments through effective turnout
- Maintain a high level of timely follow-up to follow through on commitments – both personal commitments made as well as commitments made by partners, allies and workers
- Facilitation skills and ability to move coalition members to shared agreement and action
- Maintain good judgement, flexibility, and creative thinking in difficult situations: be ready to take advantage of unexpected opportunities and adapt quickly to change
- Demonstrated self-awareness, empathy, and social skills in work and interpersonal interactions;

- Ability to work independently and carry out assignments to completion and meet deadlines;
- Ability to participate in a culture of honest and direct feedback
- Familiarity with GoogleSuite and openness to learning new administrative programs such as BambooHR, Certify and other web based platforms
- NOTE: This position will require frequent travel for field organizing throughout the greater Northern Nevada region and occasional travel in other areas.
Other Physical Requirements:
- Access to reliable transportation and ability to travel frequently for on-the-ground organizing and meetings in Northern Nevada is required. Reasonable accommodations will be made in accordance with the ADA

What Else You Should Know ─ Compensation/Benefits:
- Salary Range $61,500 – $84,500 with annual salary increases
- Depending on geographic area, a one-time cost of living adjustment (COLA) is included in the quoted salary
- 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for the employee and dependents
- Generous paid time off including 12 personal days, 12 federal holidays, and 2 floating holidays each year. JMA has a paid, two week winter break at the end of each year. Employees can accrue up to 20 vacation days and 20 sick days. After 5 years of work, all staff are eligible to apply for 3 months of sabbatical leave.
