About CARA
The California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA) is a statewide nonprofit organization that unites retirees, senior organizations, and community partners to advance social and economic justice through education, organizing, and advocacy. We fight to protect and expand Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid/Medi-Cal, and other programs that ensure dignity and security for all generations.

Position Overview
CARA is seeking a Communications Specialist to manage the organization’s external and internal communications. This position plays a key role in shaping CARA’s public image, increasing visibility, and supporting advocacy campaigns that mobilize seniors and allies across California. The ideal candidate is a strong writer, creative storyteller, and strategic thinker who can communicate CARA’s mission with clarity, energy, and impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Content Creation & Management
    • Draft, edit, and distribute press releases, newsletters, alerts, and social media posts.
    • Maintain and update CARA’s website (using Framer) and social media platforms (Facebook, Bluesky, YouTube).
    • Create engaging graphics, flyers, and campaign materials for events and advocacy actions.
  • Media Relations
    • Work with staff to draft press releases
    • Pitch stories, coordinate interviews, and manage press inquiries.
  • Campaign & Event Communications
    • Work with the Executive Director and Legislative Advocate to develop messaging and communication strategies to support CARA’s legislative and advocacy campaigns.
    • Assist with promotional materials and outreach for events such as rallies, forums, and the annual convention.
  • Internal Communications
    • Support communication with CARA’s member organizations and affiliates.
    • Work with staff to assist in the development of talking points, fact sheets, and reports.
  • Digital Engagement
    • Track analytics and engagement across communication channels.
    • Recommend strategies for expanding CARA’s digital reach and impact.
    • Assist members in creating video content 

Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms, website content management, and email tools (e.g., Mailchimp, Framer, Canva, Facebook, Bluesky, YouTube).
  • Strong graphic design and multimedia skills preferred. Photo and video editing experience preferred. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently.
  • Commitment to CARA’s mission and understanding of senior, labor, and social justice issues.
  • Experience working with labor unions, advocacy groups, and nonprofits organizations is a plus.

Work Environment

  • This is a remote, contracted position for 16 hours per week.
  • Flexible scheduling, with some availability required for events and meetings.
  • Must be based in California or have strong familiarity with California’s political and advocacy landscape.
