Senior Organizer

The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is a 400,000-member-strong, progressive, militant union with one of the largest and most diverse memberships in North America. Our members are employed in a range of workplaces, from multinational corporations to small manufacturers and state and local governments to colleges and universities, hospitals and private non-profit organizations.

The UAW is seeking seasoned Senior Organizers. This role involves strategizing, mentoring, and working closely with a team of dedicated staff and members to support workers in winning their union, first contracts, and building collective power. Positions are for organizing in the Manufacturing & Industrial sectors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct broad and extensive outreach efforts to non-union workers, building relationships with workers and establishing trust.
  • Conduct individual & group meetings with workers to discuss & plan organizing campaigns.
  • Motivate individual workers & groups of workers to take collective public action. 
  • Works with campaign director or other top staff to oversee both new organizing campaigns and contract campaigns, ensuring cohesive efforts to win first contracts.
  • Work closely with campaign director and other leads to develop, execute and revise campaign strategies to ensure victory.
  • Train temporary organizers and staff on organizing fundamentals.
  • Identify, recruit and mentor workplace leaders to guide and lead their campaigns.
  • Exhibit outstanding interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence in collaborative settings, fostering a supportive and efficient team environment.
  • Work with other leads to help move a team forward on a day-to-day basis.
  • Move turf while simultaneously helping other less experiences staff move their turf.
  • Develop campaign materials such as raps, leaflets, and emails.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • 3-5 years’ experience with new organizing and contract campaigns.
  • Mastery of entry level organizing skills
  • Proven ability to motivate workers in struggle.
  • Aptitude for building relationships with individuals from varied backgrounds.
  • Capacity to work independently and with a team
  • The ability to make and follow through on a work plan
  • Effective and persuasive communications skills
  • Willingness to conduct house visits and site visits
  • Flexibility to work long hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to do extensive travel, if necessary
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, and manage time and priorities
  • Familiarity with basic labor law.
  • Good listener, strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills with the proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical and independent problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to adapt to changing priorities and demands
  • Drafting and proofreading copy for internal and external dissemination
  • Aptitude for mentoring and fostering strong teams
  • Strong interpersonal skills that support a respectful and positive work environment
  • Ability to find solutions to complex problems.
  • Open to receiving feedback and learning new organizing skills and approaches
  • An unwavering commitment to building a fighting, member-led union.
  • Prior experience executing strikes is highly preferred.
  • Basic understanding or proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, Forms) and social media and media outreach to supervise and direct such work
  • Preference given to UAW members in continuous good standing of the International Union for a period of (1) year, pursuant to Article 14, section 3 of the UAW Constitution
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
