Business Representative

Based in Albuquerque, NM

Position Overview:
The Business Representative serves as the general manager and principal representative of Local 480, reporting directly to the President and Executive Board. This role is responsible for overseeing the Local’s operations, enforcing collective bargaining agreements, managing staff, and representing the Local in all labor-related matters, becoming the face of Local 480.

  • Business Experience in Motion Picture & Television industry is preferred
  • Willingness to relocate to New Mexico is a must

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contracts
    • Seek and secure business contracts for IATSE Local 480
    • Guide producers through correct labor-hiring practices and contract particulars
    • Ensure production managers/producers are adhering to the contracts/labor hiring standards
    • Organize productions in jurisdiction that are not in compliance with trade unionism standards
  • Membership / Office 
    • Attend all relevant events and functions and make reports to the Board and membership
    • Attend Executive Board and General Membership meetings of the Local and other special meetings/committee meetings as required
    • Attend all meetings and negotiations set forth by the international office
    • Respond to member calls/emails/inquiries in a timely fashion
    • Serve as the General Manager of the Local 480 office and oversee day-to-day operations
    • Maintain a working knowledge of and conform to all standing rules and the IATSE Local 480 Constitution & Bylaws and International Constitution & Bylaws
    • Help facilitate public/political relations for IATSE Local 480 and attend related events
    • Ensure members are in good standing and serve as a representative on behalf of member affairs
    • Work with the Treasurer to ensure that fiscal policies benefit IATSE Local 480 and its members
    • Visit studios, sets, and workplaces to represent and support members.
    • Serve as an ex-officio member of all committees.
    • Attend meetings and programs of the International Alliance, Studio Mechanics Locals, and affiliated labor bodies.
    • Supervise and manage organizing efforts including the development and execution of strategic organizing plans at the state and local levels.
    • Facilitate problem-solving and resolve disputes or problems concerning workplace and organizational issues.
    • Conduct annual performance reviews of staff members.
    • Develop, implement and drive worksite and community mobilization strategies. 
    • Provide employers with member lists for potential employment, ensuring fairness and non-discrimination.

Qualifications and Required Skills:

  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Proven experience in labor relations, union administration, and collective bargaining.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
  • Ability to manage campaigns both large and small
  • Regularly work extended hours (exceeding 40 hours per week) including weekends and evenings, to perform assigned responsibilities. This is an on call 24/7 style job.
  • Knowledge of employment law, labor agreements, and union governance.
  • Ability to represent members impartially and uphold union values.
  • Experience in Human Resources and Public Relations, is a plus.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software programs as well as good understanding of accounting software.

Compensation & Terms:

  • Competitive salary based on industry standards 
  • Compensation, benefits, and terms of employment are determined by the Executive Board, in line with the Local’s financial policy.
  • Employment contract is for a three-year term, renewable at the discretion of the Local.
  • Annual performance review conducted by the Executive Board.
  • A background check will be performed prior to hiring
