Overview of Responsibilities
The Vermont AFL-CIO seeks an Organizer to help build labor’s statewide political power and increase civic participation among members. In particular, this position will focus on labor-to-labor outreach around Proposal 3, the proposed constitutional amendment to Vermont’s constitution, which will be on the November 3, 2026 general election ballot. 

Description of Duties
The Organizer is based in our Montpelier, VT offices with remote work available, and is responsible for organizing labor for our political campaigns. The position will work with our affiliates to help develop and carry through political engagement and organizing plans. This includes:

  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with affiliates, members, elected officials, community, and labor leaders.
  • Planning events to engage workers in the political work of the VSLC.
  • Planning and coordinating campaign activities, grassroots lobbying, phone banking and events for our campaigns as needed.
  • Supporting campaign tactics, including rallies, press events and targeted member activity.
  • Providing briefings and education materials for staff and members around legislative and electoral work.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications and Skills

  • 2-3 years of experience in worker or community organizing, legislative, or electoral campaigns.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the labor movement is strongly preferred. A strong commitment to social and economic justice and the commitment to organize the unorganized through the labor movement
  • Ability to train and teach people of varying skill sets around economic and social justice issues.
  • Ability to plan and execute large-scale events with staff support.
  • Ability to design and implement powerful and effective campaign plans.
  • Excellent communications skills and experience building strong working relationships with various stakeholders including elected officials, civic organizations, and other community groups.
  • Experience building coalitions among diverse organizations and understanding of the historic tensions that exist in the relationships between community and labor and knowledge and experience in navigating the complexities of the relationships.
  • Ability to work independently within the context of a plan. Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing personal work plans and goals. Demonstrated ability to build teams and work effectively in a team environment in both a lead and a support role.
  • Ability to travel and to work some evenings and weekends as required. Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Computer proficiency and Google Workspace proficiency is required; experience with NGP VAN and Labor Action Network (LAN) a plus.

Job Details: 
The Organizer works under the direct supervision of the Vermont AFL-CIO Executive Director and works in close collaboration with the Vermont AFL-CIO President and Executive Committee. It is a hybrid remote position, based in Montpelier, VT.

Salary:
Full time, $58,000.00 to $62,000.00 a year with benefits including 80% healthcare premium for single coverage (or buy-out option at 50% with proof of other group insurance), reimbursement for dental and vision coverage, annual and sick leave, short term disability, and up to 5% 401K retirement match.
