Working Title: Political Director
Position Type: Management series – SEIU Local 1107 Senior Team.
Reports to: Executive Director or designee
Supervisory Duties: Supervises staff, consultants, and interns. Responsible for training and development, discipline/termination of supervised staff.

Coordination: International Union Political and Government Relations Departments; Local union management; Local union officers, as directed; union political consultants; offices of elected officials (local, state, federal); community partners.

Primary Contact for: Community partner organizations; International Union Political, Government Relations staff; union political directors; SEIU Local 1107 Political Organizing Committee; staff at local, state, federal elected officials; staff at local, state, and federal agencies, and state AFL-CIO.

Scope – Politics and Community Organizing, Legislative Advocacy:

  • The Political Director manages SEIU Local 1107’s member-driven political and advocacy programs, moves progressive pro-labor policy at the state and local level, and engages in coalition work with community partners to improve the lives of working families. Cultivate and strengthen relationships with elected officials, community partners, and organizational allies.
  • The role supports the union’s local and state legislative program: this includes lobbying, working with union staff and officers, members, community stakeholders and key staff of elected leaders to identify and develop pro-worker legislation, utilizing organizing, advocacy, and policy strategies to move a successful legislative agenda.
  • The role will develop and grow the union’s member-driven political program: this includes coordinating and maximizing participation/activism of SEIU Local 1107’s Political Organizing Committee (POC), management of electoral activities, and building a robust COPE program that fully integrates with member organizing and growth goals. 
  • Coalition building: the union partners with several community and labor organizations as part of its legislative and political program. This requires productive collaboration with partners and representing SEIU members’ perspectives and interests. The role will also collaborate with members to connect with community partners and organizations and develop leaders in our communities and our worksites. 

Example of Duties:

  • Coordinate electoral activities, including direct mail, phone banks, GOTV, precinct organization, vote-by-mail, etc.
  • Develop and implement electoral strategies, targeting, and communications. 
  • Serve as one of the union’s lobbyists during the legislative session
  • Track local and state legislative, legal, and regulatory trends that relate to the union’s program areas and impact union membership.
  • Oversee legislative affairs for SEIU Local 1107, providing leadership and expertise for the development and management of strategies to inform and influence public policy on issues of interest to SEIU Local 1107.
  • Design and conduct political education training for staff, members, and allies.
  • Develop politically engaged members into Member Political Organizers and political leaders. 
  • Implement internal and external voter registration and signature drives and efforts.
  • Coordinate the Local’s political activities with SEIU International, in-state unions, and other allies.
  • Assist in the Local’s Political Organizing Committee’s member-driven candidate and ballot initiative endorsement process.
  • Build community/labor coalitions/partnerships to support the Local’s political agenda.
  • Develop, plan, and coordinate a successful membership and/or COPE campaign.
  • Manage the work of assigned staff, consultants, and interns.
  • Develop, plan, and coordinate political and community campaigns.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Skills and Abilities Beneficial for the Assignment:

  • Develop an effective understanding of the scope of SEIU Local 1107’s membership, structure and policy goals. Ability to produce thorough research related to sectors that employ SEIU Local 1107 members.
  • Experience in planning and executing electoral activities, including phone banks, GOTV, precinct organization, vote-by-mail, signature gathering, direct mail, social media, etc.
  • Productive experience in coalition building with successful collaboration, conflict management and multi-organizational campaign work.
  • Experience in legislative advocacy including strategic planning, policy development and analysis, organizing, lobbying and earned media.
  • Knowledge and experience with the Nevada State Legislature; state and local government.
  • Ability to analyze and review legislation and draft appropriate amendments for consideration by formal legislative bodies
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire members to develop into leaders and participate in key union programs (i.e., political, organizing, coalition building, and legislative advocacy.)
  • Demonstrated understanding of organizing and how it can be used to empower members and ensure superior outcomes in workers’ lives.
  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to providing quality member experiences, including the ability to establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Sound organizational skills to manage and prioritize work subject to deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment, as an individual and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate and deliver on short-term and long-term member development and capacity-building goals.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor long-term plans.
  • Skilled public communicator and relationship builder.
  • Demonstrated written and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of government relations and related issues.
  • Advanced knowledge and fluency of campaign tools and CRMs. 
  • Strong consultative problem-solving.
  • Project management experience in technically and operationally complex environments.

Working Conditions:
The role requires long and irregular hours, and to work on weekends and holidays when necessary. Willingness to relocate full-time to Carson City during legislative session if necessary.

The salary range for this position is $80,000 – $104,381.85 and commensurate with experience. This position includes 100% employer-paid health insurance, pension, life insurance, AD&D, Long-Term Disability, and car allowance.
