Salary: $95,038 – $142,567

This position provides financial and auditing services to all affiliates and management at AFSCME's field and headquarters offices.

DUTIES:

  • Conducts field audits of affiliates which consist of a review of revenue and expenses to ensure financial activities are in compliance with the AFSCME Constitution and Financial Standards Code. Prepares financial reports on findings and recommendations.
  • Responds to inquiries from affiliates requesting assistance or information on accounting and financial matters. Provides information on routine matters wherever possible.
  • Conduct training courses to assist affiliates on various financial matters.
  • Assists affiliates with questions regarding government agencies.
  • Performs desk audits of budgets, and quarterly financial reports submitted by large affiliates.
  • May assist affiliates in day-to-day accounting operations and in filling vacant positions in the financial and accounting areas.
  • Assists with special short-term projects dealing with Accounting Department operations. These may involve internal audits of various activities to ensure proper compliance with established procedures.
  • May coordinate the annual informational mailing to affiliates apprising them of current IRS filing requirements of IRS Forms 990/990-EZ/990-N.
  • Assists with the investigation of potential bonding claims and processing claims on behalf of affiliates. Coordinates the claims with the affiliate and the bonding agent.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in accounting and auditing and a minimum of five (5) years of work experience in an auditing or accounting environment performing tasks which provide the following knowledge, skills and abilities: 

Skills:

  • Knowledge of forensic auditing and accounting practices and principles, and appropriate reporting requirements of financial statements. 
  • Ability to collect, analyze and compare financial data and identify data anomalies. 
  • Ability to conduct research and make logical, reliable, and sound financial conclusions and to make appropriate auditing judgments. 
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and complete assignments under pressure to meet tight schedules. 
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite with a concentration in Excel. 
  • Ability to use databases and financial application software. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation to proofread and compose correspondence.

Extended Hours and Travel:

  • Extensive travel, extended work hours including weekends and a valid driver’s license are required.
