Position Summary/PURPOSE:
Working directly with the Executive Director and the Executive Board, the Controller is responsible for all financial matters of the organization, including all accounting functions, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliation, fixed assets, general accounting, payroll, financial analysis, reports and audits, and regulatory compliance filings. As a key overseer of the Local’s finances, the Controller also has responsibility for assessing and strengthening operational efficiency and internal control of the Finance Department in support of the Local’s functions and initiatives.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Manages financial monthly closing process and reports; ensures that the reporting results comply with GAAP and other applicable reporting standards.
- Provides financial analysis to Financial Officers with emphasis on measuring the Local’s financial performance, reporting budget variances with timely explanations and recommendations
- Oversees compliance reports and other regulatory filings, including income taxes, local property taxes, payroll and employee benefits filings, Forms LM-2 and LD-2, PAC reporting and other governmental requirements.
- Maintains and upgrades as needed key financial systems including accounting, financial reporting, online banking and investment, payroll (including timekeeping), and credit card payment processing.
- Supervises a staff of finance and accounting employees, including establishing and maintaining organizational structure and staffing as well as selecting, training and mentoring of accounting staff, as needed
- Assists the ED with preparation and completion of the fiscal year budgeting process, evaluates department performance against budget, and develops forecasts to provide an accurate projection of financial performance.
- Oversees the monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with US GAAP; including preparation of monthly and quarterly financial statements to the Finance Officers and Board.
- Manages the annual financial audit process performed by our independent CPA firm, including regular reporting to the Executive Board’s Audit Committee.
- Develops, analyzes, documents and implements internal controls, including developing, maintaining and enhancing accounting and finance policies, processes and procedures to comply with US GAAP;
- Seeks opportunities to revise or create new policies and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the accounting group.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Working knowledge of GAAP, federal, state, and local compliance regulations and reporting.
- Financial, analytical and problem-solving skills to analyze complex issues.
- Superior systems knowledge, including MS Office Suite, Quickbooks, ADP.
- Excellent supervisory and communications skills with the ability to work with Local staff, elected leadership, members, and others doing business with the Local.
- Knowledge of labor union regulation strongly preferred.
- CPA required, with preferred union or labor experience
- Managerial experience, including supervising staff and overseeing financial operations.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field.
- 6 years proven accounting experience with a minimum of 5+ years progressively more responsible senior-level accounting or financial manager experience.
- Professional accounting certification including CMA, CGA, or CA
Additional Requirements:
- Occasional overnight travel.
- Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
- Must possess a valid California driver's license, auto insurance with business coverage, and an automobile for business use.
- Physical Requirements (as required by ADA): Prolonged sitting and working with computers. Repetitive motions use of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Be able to lift 20 pounds or more.

Salary is dependent on experience with a comprehensive benefits package including: over $8000/year in allowances, fully-paid Kaiser medical, dental, and vision insurance for self and family, and a defined-benefit pension, business allowance, car insurance reimbursement, and educational reimbursement.
