Part-time Associate Director of Organizing and Training

Reports to: MTI Executive Director
Coordinates with: Bargaining Unit Presidents, MTI Professional Staff, MTI Education Justice Coordinator, and MTI Membership Coordinator

Madison Teachers Inc. (MTI), a Union of teachers, education professionals, and educational support paraprofessionals in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) in Madison Wisconsin, is seeking a part-time (50%) Associate Director of Organizing and Training that will help increase membership, promote member engagement, and develop the next generation of Union leadership!

The successful candidate for this position will have organizing or teaching experience, be willing to listen and learn from others, and be committed to public schools, social justice, and member-led democratic unionism. They will be value-driven, self-motivated, independent, resourceful, and must be willing to meet with members and Union leadership at times that are convenient for them (e.g. before and/or after school hours). 

Position Summary:
The Associate Director of Organizing & Training is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing membership and issue campaigns; designing and delivering education and training programs to members and potential members; developing Union leaders, and establishing reporting structures using a membership tracking database.

This position will help worksite union representatives monitor membership density, increase organizing capacity and member engagement, and build consistent Union communication structures.

This is a bargaining unit position in the Professional Staff Union (PSU), an affiliate of IBEW 2304, and is governed by a collective bargaining agreement. 

Key Responsibilities:
Organizing:

  • Plan and execute organizing campaigns to build membership and workplace power.
  • Identify, recruit, and develop union activists and leaders.
  • Conduct worksite visits, facilitate worksite meetings, and conduct one-on-one meetings with members and potential members.
  • Support Union campaigns, worksite issue-based organizing, and member organizing drives.
  • Help develop and gather consistent membership information from worksite representatives.
  • Analyze and assess membership data to inform organizing strategies.
  • Coordinate with local affiliates and national partners on joint organizing initiatives.

Training & Leadership Development:

  • Design and deliver comprehensive training programs for members, building representatives, and emerging leaders on topics such as organizing skills, union rights, leadership development, collective bargaining, and political advocacy.
  • Develop and maintain training materials, toolkits, and resources to support union leadership, issue organizing and leadership development.
  • Facilitate workshops, retreats, and educational programs in various formats (in-person and virtual).
  • Mentor and coach Union representatives to build capacity and confidence in representing their colleagues at the worksite.

Collaboration & Support:

  • Work closely with the MTI President and the Presidents of MTI Affiliates, Professional Staff, Membership Coordinator, Education Justice Coordinator and Boards of Directors to align organizing and training efforts with broader union goals.
  • Support worksite representative teams to identify potential members, provide guidance and support for issue-based organizing campaigns. 
  • Assist in crisis response and rapid organizing needs as they arise.

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission of public education, social justice, and union values.
  • Proven experience in union, community, or political organizing (3-5 years preferred).
  • Strong facilitation and adult education skills with experience developing and conducting interactive trainings, both in-person and on-line.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including active listening and relationship-building.
  • Clear and concise communication skills; written and verbal.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data using spreadsheets, databases, or similar applications.
  • Experience conducting online meetings and using digital communication applications.
  • Self-motivated, strategic thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends).
  • Valid driver’s license (if applicable) and reliable transportation to visit worksites as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • General knowledge of organizing strategies, collective bargaining, and public education policy.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus.
  • Experience working with educators or public sector unions.
