Overview
WTU, AFT Local 6, seeks a mission-driven Organizer to help strengthen member engagement and advocacy across DC Public Schools. The ideal candidate will partner with Building Reps and union members to grow organizing capacity, defend contract rights, and advance education justice in our communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Build systems for membership sign-up, new hire orientation, and member communications
- Support the creation of worksite leadership structures and school-based organizing committees
- Utilize tech tools like AFT Connect, Action Builder, VAN, Hustle, and Action Network
- Coordinate internal organizing, bargaining support, and political campaigns
- Mobilize members around contract enforcement, grievance support, and legislative issues
- Plan and execute school-level and union-wide actions
- Develop grassroots leaders who can activate parent/community support
- Maintain organizing data, reports, calendars, and member engagement records
Job Qualifications
- Proven involvement in union, community, or political organizing
- Experience with grievance handling and contract enforcement
- Skilled in campaign planning and member engagement
- Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Well-organized, self-motivated, and committed to union values
- Comfortable working flexible hours and handling multiple priorities
- Tech-savvy: proficient in databases, spreadsheets, email, and social media
- Valid driver's license and/or access to reliable transportation
- Union leadership experience is a plus, but not required
Education & Training
Background in communication, grassroots organizing, political science, labor studies, or related fields preferred.
