Assistant to the Director of Accounting
Accounting and Budgeting Department
Based in Washington, DC
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters is looking to fill an Assistant to the Director of Accounting to work in the Accounting and Budgeting Department. Under the general supervision of the Director of Accounting, the Assistant is responsible for supporting the Director in a variety of areas including accounting, budgeting, cash flow monitoring, bank transaction approvals, government reporting, and financial statement preparation and analysis.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Aids in the review of monthly financial statements for accuracy and reasonability.
- Assists in the preparation of Department of Labor Form LM-2.
- Performs periodic review and updating of the Accounting Policies and Procedures manual.
- Summarizes banking activity for weekly cash flow report.
- Reviews and approves bank wire transactions, ACH transactions, and the set-up of new vendors requesting electronic check payments.
- Prepares monthly reconciliations and summaries of activity for Investments, Intercompany Accounts, and Per Capita Revenue.
- Functions as accountant responsible for IBT benefit trust funds including monthly reconciliation of accounts, preparation of journal entries and preparation of financial statements.
- Prepares and/or audits journal entries, as assigned.
- Aids in the implementation of and changes to the ongoing operation of the Accounting software system.
- Assists the Accounting Manager, section Managers and Supervisors, and others as needed.
- Analyzes and reconciles financial data for use when filing required reports/returns with local, federal, and foreign governments, as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting required.
- Knowledge of computerized accounting system required.
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, trust fund and other accounting procedures required.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
Requirements:
- Up to three years of accounting experience in a similar position, i.e. performing similar duties as this position, etc. preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office software, specifically spreadsheet and database software, at an advanced level required.
- Working knowledge of local and federal filing requirements a plus.
- Demonstrated knowledge of union structure and function preferred.
- Working knowledge of accepted accounting practices and procedures required is a plus.
- Up to three years of related experience and/or training in the field of labor unions, employee benefit plans, trust funds and/or other non-profit organizations preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Dynamic, or a comparable product, preferred.
- Exhibited proficiency in Crystal Reports, or a comparable product, preferred.
Selected candidates will be required to sit for a screening and Excel tests.
Starting salary ranges from $85,000 – $95,000. The IBT offers a robust benefits package including a 100%-employer paid health & welfare plan, vacation & sick leave, pension, FICA reimbursement, and 401(k).
