Business Agent

Based in Tukwila, WA

 

Teamsters Local 174 is seeking applicants for a Business Agent role. This position is based out of the Tukwila office and may represent workers around Washington State. 

Teamsters Local 174 is a general union representing over 8,000 members in the private and public sectors within Washington State. The professions we represent are primarily truck driver and warehouse jobs throughout the small package delivery, bus driver, sanitation, freight, beverage, beer, liquor, and construction industries. 

The qualifications we are looking for include the following:

  • Experience in negotiating union labor agreements or being part of a negotiating team.
  • Understanding of federal and state laws pertaining to collective bargaining and workers’ rights.
  • Ability to independently process grievances.
  • Ability to write clearly and speak effectively and persuasively.
  • Ability to interpret contract language.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and interact with a wide variety of people in situations that are often adversarial.
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office and Excel.
  • Knowledge of issues affecting working people.
  • A Washington State driver’s license, reliable automobile, and auto insurance.
  • Willingness to work long hours, including some weekends and evenings, and travel around Washington State, as necessary.

Duties Include, but are not limited to:

  • Represent the membership in labor negotiations.
  • Preparation of contract proposals and the formulation of bargaining strategies.
  • Contract administration, grievance resolution, counseling and advising members and Shop Stewards.
  • Writing professional member communications.
  • Preparation and presentation of educational and informational programs.
  • Interaction with employer representatives, attorneys, and elected officials.
  • Internal organizing, member mobilization, contract, and community campaigns.
  • Legislative and political action.
  • Participation in labor, community, and political affairs.
  • Attend picketing and leafleting activities.
  • Work independently, representing members in the areas of wages, benefits, and working conditions; Prepare and present grievances, Board of Adjustment cases, and arbitration prep.
