Overview
Under the leadership and direction of the Political Director, the Political Action Representative assists in the day-to-day operations of NYSUT’s political department. Specifically, this position works with the Political Director to manage the political action data for NYSUT’s electoral and issue-based campaigns and assist with the administrating the union’s fundraising arm. Confidential work on behalf of the Political Director will be required. Further responsibilities may include general departmental oversight and administration, as assigned.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist in developing various strategic political approaches
- Analyze data and information involving voter turnout trends, results and behaviors
- Manage internal schedule and calendar for campaigns
- Oversee and work within external data programs utilized by the department, including: the Voter Action Network (VAN), Action Network, Hustle, Catalist, and similar programs
- Assist in the development of field programs such as voter registrations efforts, member mobilization, voter contact, get out-the-vote activities, and other similar events
- Assist in the development and execution of candidate training, NYSUT’s pipeline project and other special projects
- Serve as editor and proofreader for department priorities and materials
- Assist in the planning of large-scale annual events
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
- Background in political/issue-based campaigns, electoral targeting, and/or political data
- Superior communication (oral and written) skills, and the ability to prioritize, organize and communicate effectively
- A working knowledge of and experience in campaigns and elections from school board elections to presidential campaigns
- A working knowledge of and experience in state laws that govern such activities
- Able to promote teamwork and collaboration among departments within NYSUT and with our coalition partners
- At least 3 years of political, organizing, data or polling experience is preferred
- Familiarity with VAN, Hustle, Catalist, Office 365 and advanced knowledge of Excel
- Must be willing and able to work irregular hours and travel on occasional as required
