Job Title: Political Coordinator
Reports to: Political Director
Purpose: The Political Coordinator is responsible for working with SEIU locals and allies to support the grassroots advocacy, electoral efforts, and capacity-building required to achieve our overall vision and goals. The position demands leadership ability, strong interpersonal skills, creativity, problem-solving abilities, robust planning skills, and a willingness to take on any task, big or small. The Coordinator works under the direction of the Political Director.
Essential Functions:
- Achieving campaign goals with little direct supervision.
- Work with allies, Local Union leaders and staff and International Union and State Council staff to set and achieve political program goals.
- Strategic planning, implementation and coordination of local union and multi-local campaigns and programs such as; fundraising, voter registration, grassroots issues, member education and participation in electoral and issue campaigns.
- Provide staff support and leadership to State Council Issue Teams and campaigns.
- Conduct and support training and leadership development programs for local union staff and members to support program implementation and capacity building.
- Plan and coordinate State Council events and programs.
- Coordinate SEIU’s endorsement process for candidates and ballot measures.
- Plan, support and/or direct voter education and GOTV campaigns, both internally with SEIU locals, with labor-to-labor campaigns and in independent expenditure campaigns.
- Prepare and/or support the creation of member education materials.
- Manage relevant technology to assist with electoral, legislative and issue campaigns
- Track and report on field campaign activities, including issue and electoral campaigns, and work with SEIU locals to increase their internal tracking and accountability.
- Coordinate SEIU participation with Central Labor Councils, the SEIU International Union and other coalition partners.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Strong personal commitment to the Labor Movement and State Council’s mission and values.
- Ability to represent the State Council and SEIU in all public activities such as with members, elected officials, community allies and the larger labor community.
- Minimum 3 years of experience with a union, or political, community or advocacy group, planning and directing electoral, issue and/or other campaigns.
- Demonstrated strategic planning and implementation of programs and/or campaigns.
- Ability to plan and manage multiple campaigns and projects simultaneously in a high-pressure environment requiring rapid adjustment to changing priorities and strategies.
- Proven ability to work with a diverse group of people, including union members, union staff and leaders, and elected officials.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to motivate, lead, build strong working relationships and hold others accountable.
- A thorough understanding and appreciation of the skills necessary for long-term base building and leadership development.
- Self-motivated, great attitude and strong team player.
- Strong sense of professionalism and integrity.
- Strong writing skills.
- Basic competency and familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Commitment to continuous learning.
Extent of public contact: 100% including high level Local Leaders and staff, Elected Officials, Government and State agency employees and representatives.
Fiscal Responsibilities: Responsible for use of organizational credit card, and accurate accounting of personal business expenditures and expense reporting process.
Work conditions and environment: This position is located in California, and can be hybrid or remote. Willingness to work long hours including weekends and statewide travel up to 50%. Ability to maintain professionalism and productivity in a high-pressure environment.
Salary and benefits: Salary range $98,870.21 – $168,719.48, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits.
