Campaign Description: Long Beach for a Just Economy (LBJE), a project of LAANE, is a grassroots coalition working to build an equitable and inclusive economy in Long Beach. Through civic engagement, base-building, legislative advocacy, and coalition organizing, LBJE advances policies that center the needs of working-class Black, Brown, and immigrant communities. Our coalition led the successful passage of Measure WW, which provided hotel workers with safety protections; Measure RW, which secured the highest minimum wage in the country for Long Beach hotel workers; and Measure A, which expanded tenant protections and funding for affordable housing. LBJE plays a critical role in expanding civic participation, advancing housing and labor justice, and building long-term local organizing infrastructure.
Position Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Project Director, the Community Organizer will be responsible for implementing civic engagement strategies, strengthening grassroots power, and mobilizing residents around critical worker-justice and housing-justice campaigns. The role includes:
- Leading door-to-door outreach, phone banking, and relational organizing to mobilize community members.
- Supporting and growing a base of community and worker leaders through political education, 1-on-1s, training, and leadership development.
- Coordinating voter engagement and get-out-the-vote operations in key neighborhoods.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with labor unions, faith-based groups, housing advocates, and other local allies.
- Organizing campaign actions, community forums, town halls, and rallies.
- Overseeing interns and supporting volunteer teams.
- Contributing to campaign strategy and grassroots media efforts in collaboration with LAANE’s communications staff.
- Supporting legislative advocacy and city council engagement as needed.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of three years’ experience in organizing, preferably with a background in base building and coalition building within community, labor, or grassroots campaign organizations.
- A strong and demonstrated commitment to social, racial and economic justice and the labor movement.
- Familiarity with the Long Beach political and organizing landscape is a plus.
- Cultural humility and comfort working across Black, Brown, immigrant, LGBTQIA+, and working-class communities.
- Ability to work independently and collectively within a team, and possession of strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Willingness to work longer hours and weekends as necessary.
- Experience in civic engagement campaigns, electoral field work, or leadership development.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Spanish fluency is strongly preferred.
Terms of Employment: This is a full-time, salaried position. The LAANE entry level salary is $73,000. The hiring committee will make an offer that is dependent on experience and qualifications. LAANE offers 100% Employer Paid Family Medical, Dental, and a 401(k). LAANE is a qualified federal student loan forgiveness employer.
Generous paid time off including 12 personal days, 9 observed holidays, and 3 floating holidays each year. LAANE has a paid, two week winter break at the end of each year. Employees can accrue up to 20 vacation days and 12 sick days.
The position is not a 9 to 5 job; it does require work on nights and weekends, as well as an expectation to support LAANE’s broader work in ‘all hands on deck’ actions. We are a proud union employer. This position is a bargaining unit position.
