Political Organizer

Salary: $70,000+, commensurate with experience in political organizing and/or in the public education field per collective bargaining agreement.

Job Description:
The Boston Teachers Union represents approximately 7,500+ teachers, paraprofessionals and substitutes in the Boston Public Schools, along with another 3,500 retired members.  The BTU is seeking applicants for a Political Organizer. This new staff member will report directly to the BTU Political Director.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Lead the BTU Electoral Action Team
  • Develop and implement electoral and political campaigns, focused on increasing member engagement in BTU political work 
  • Recruit BTU members to volunteer in electoral campaigns of BTU endorsed candidates
  • Build relationships with members to identify and develop their political leadership
  • Actively work with and support the BTU staff team to implement the mission and goals of the union
  • Support organizing efforts through connecting with members of the BTU community, participating in workshops, and meeting with elected officials
  • Track and document information gathered from conversations and actions taken
  • Support Political Director and Committee on Political Education with sending, reviewing, scheduling, and tracking endorsement questionnaires and interviews
  • Read and analyze legislation
  • Lobby at City Hall and State House for BTU priorities
  • Participate in state and local coalitions as a representative of the BTU
  • The ability to support other organized events within the BTU.

Primary Knowledge, Skills and Experience needed:

  • At least 3 years of demonstrated skill as a community, labor or political organizer
  • Experience developing campaign plans to mobilize members or support electoral campaigns
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills
  • Experience effectively navigating conflict or tensions among co-workers; able to give and receive feedback from both labor and community members
  • Knowledge of the public education system in Boston
  • Experience recruiting and training volunteers for electoral campaigns
  • Familiarity with digital media tools, Microsoft Word, Excel etc. 
  • Familiarity with Votebuilder and other voter contact tools.
  • Ability to read, analyze and write legislation
  • Ability to navigate participation in coalitions
  • Experience and ability in communicating with elected officials to accomplish goals.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates should have the ability to:
    • work independently and in a team setting with a diverse group of people
    • create a work plan and use it effectively to manage multiple tasks and projects
    • meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
    • create and effectively utilize a range of outreach tools (i.e. creating fliers)
  • Candidates should also:
    • be willing to work long hours periodically, including some nights and weekends
  • Have a valid driver’s license and personal vehicle
  • Proficiency in Spanish or other languages is a plus
