Position Overview
Teamsters Local 2010 is pleased to announce a temporary Communications Specialist position to be filled September 2025 through February 2026.
This position offers a unique opportunity to support more than 23,000 administrative, allied service, skilled trade, and classified managers employed in public education. The Union is currently seeking to fill one temporary position to support our statewide efforts. This position will report to the Union headquarters located in Oakland, California with an option of up to 75% remote work that could change based on the needs of the organization. The position will be responsible for representing the interests of Teamsters Local 2010, its officers, members and staff at all times with employers, state federations, area labor councils and central labor councils, affiliates and constituency groups under the supervision of the Secretary-Treasurer, or designee.
Experienced Communications Specialists committed to social justice by advancing workers’ rights using the voice of the members through various platforms and mediums of communications should apply. The ideal candidate will be versed in communications with experience in organized labor, social justice, or political issues and possess excellent written and digital skills that both deepen and broaden engagement with the members, community support groups, and the public. Communications Specialists are considered ‘at will – exempt’ in that they may supervise and train activists and administrative staff; have access to confidential information; have input to management positions for internal and external union operations; and exercise independent decision-making authority.
Essential Duties
- Support complex communications program requiring a wide variety of communications media, including written, visual, digital and electronic, and associated technical applications
- Assist in the development and implementation of communications and campaign strategies essential to supporting the goals and objectives of the Local Union
- Execute communications across all media platforms;
- Photography and basic graphic design skills are required; video editing skills are a plus
- Write clear and compelling messages to drive member engagement, increase membership and continually improve the Union’s communications with varied audiences
- Assist with member leader spokesperson trainings and development
- Produce a variety of high-quality digital and written materials such as email, direct mail, brochures, flyers, press releases, speeches, and talking points
- Assist in earned and paid media efforts, including conceptualizing and holding events such as press conferences and worker actions
- Maintain Union website and social media accounts. Assist in expanding social media offerings to increase audience and engagement
- Assist with preparation and execution of text messages and robo calls
- Serve, on occasion, as Union spokesperson to the media and at various events
- Attend and cover critical meetings and events as directed
Minimum Requirements
- Two or more years’ experience supporting a labor or other non-profit communications program including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications, for a large, highly visible organization
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in journalism or communications preferred
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Google Docs, AdobeCreative Cloud; experience with Salesforce preferred
- Fast learner, ability to adapt to new technology, ability to seek out and recommend innovative ways to increase the Union’s reach
- Willingness to work extended hours as needed to complete projects and support other Union activities as requested
- Ability to travel to provide communications coverage throughout Northern California
- Photography and basic graphic design skills are required; video editing skills are a plus
Physical Demands: This position includes a combination of field and office work requiring travel to worksites, participation in events, and other assignments that require periods of sitting, walking, standing, bending, twisting, grasping and moving or lifting heavy items.
Compensation
Teamsters Local 2010 offers competitive salary commensurate with work experience. The salary range for this full-time temporary position is $62,400 up to $83,200 based on experience, skills and abilities and will be exempt from overtime. In addition, medical, dental, vision, life and retiree health insurance will be offered. This position will report to the Union headquarters located in Oakland, California with an option of up to 75% remote work that could change based on the needs of the organization.
