Political Director
Based in Oakland, CA
The Alameda Labor Council ranks among the largest and most dynamic labor councils in California, representing over 135,000 members across Alameda County. We represent healthcare, transportation, education, construction, manufacturing, and services workers. The ideal candidate for the Political Director position will have extensive experience in labor and electoral politics, along with strong communication and analytical skills. We aim to fill this role quickly, with the selected candidate responsible for enhancing the Labor Council’s field and communication strategies for several crucial campaigns. This position requires in-person attendance at our Oakland office.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Assist in developing and implementing a strategic plan for the political endorsements of the ALC, CFLU, and/or AFL-CIO across various local, state, and national political campaigns.
- Coordinate and execute the Council’s political, organizing, and policy agenda.
- Strengthen the Council’s internal political capacity to support our strategic goals.
- Create strategies to increase participation in our COPE (Committee on Political Education).
- Implement political and COPE training for staff, members, and candidates.
- Build political and community support for organizing initiatives and political or issue campaigns.
- Plan and execute large-scale mobilizations.
- Build coalitions with community allies to organize efforts that address the long-term challenges working families face in Alameda County.
- Sustain and enhance connections with community allies, elected officials, candidates, and political campaigns.
- Manage the political budget and support fundraising for COPE.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- 5+ years’ experience in developing and managing all aspects of political campaigns and developing and executing field strategies, including 3+ years of lobbying, policy, and labor organizing. Demonstrated ability to plan and organize multiple campaigns and projects simultaneously.
- Proficient in developing and executing reporting frameworks and campaign tools. Experience providing field analysis based on reported numbers.
- Proven experience with budget management.
- Experience with and broad understanding of campaign finance reporting.
- Ability to work effectively with leaders, volunteers, allies, elected officials, and diverse populations. Extensive coalition-building experience.
- Excellent planning and organizational skills.
- Sophisticated knowledge of legal, political, economic, and industry forces that impact organizing campaigns.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Computer proficiency is required; database/spreadsheet, email, internet, word processing, and social networking skills.
- An ability to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment, including flexibility on nights and weekends.
- A commitment to the labor movement and to advancing social justice.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Fluency in a second language is desirable.
