The Minnesota Newspaper & Communications Guild, TNG-CWA Local 37002, is seeking an Executive Officer to oversee the operations of our union.
Who we are
Based in Minnesota’s dynamic and progressive Twin Cities metropolitan area, our local represents more than 500 workers across several industries. We are the second-oldest local within The NewsGuild, with a history of advocating for our members that stretches back more than 90 years.
Our 28 units include medical language interpreters at Hennepin Healthcare, staffers at nonprofit organizations and other unions, as well as several print shops, but the majority of our members work for news organizations. The largest of these is the Minnesota Star Tribune. As a union representing journalists, we do not endorse political candidates.
What you’ll do
Our executive officer works closely with our local’s member-led executive committee and its president to set priorities and shape our budget. You’ll also help set internal policies for our union and work to increase member engagement. You’ll work primarily out of our office just east of the Minneapolis-St. Paul border, but some driving to other locations will be necessary.
Among your most important day-to-day responsibilities will be negotiating and enforcing labor contracts, organizing new units, and acting as a liaison between our local and The NewsGuild/CWA, as well as local and regional labor organizations. You’ll also oversee our two-person office staff, which includes our office manager and internal organizer.
What you’ll need
- Experience in bargaining, filing grievances, and mobilization/organizing
- To be self-directed and dependable with a strong work ethic
- Experience managing the work of others and managing a budget
- Creative problem solving
- High degree of emotional intelligence and patience
- Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Don’t meet every requirement above? Please apply anyway! We’d love to learn about your experiences and qualifications for this role.

This job offers opportunities to both work independently and collaborate with colleagues who are just as passionate about improving the working lives of our members as you are. It also offers a flexible schedule, as well as training and educational opportunities.
