The Rochester Union of Nurses & Allied Professionals (RUNAP) is an independent union of over 1,000 Registered Nurses in Rochester, NY. Founded in 2022, RUNAP won a historic first contract in 2023 and has continued the fight for safe patient care in the Rochester community.

RUNAP is a member of the Northeast Nurses Association coalition.

Job Summary
RUNAP is looking for an experienced Organizer to help the union continue to build power around critical issues like safe staffing, patient care, and a bedside voice in decision-making.

RUNAP is a new union still building its (small) staff. This posting is for a six-month contract, with the possibility of a permanent position being created at the end of the year. We are open to applicants who would be interested only in a temporary contract, as well as those who would be interested in a longer-term position.

This is a full-time position based at the RUNAP office in Rochester, NY. The position requires frequent local travel for meetings and events, though some work can be done remotely. Occasional out-of-town travel for organizing trainings and coalition meetings may also be required.

This is a salaried, overtime-exempt position that will include frequent evening meetings and occasional work on weekends. Both the Executive Director and Lead Organizer are longtime staff organizers and feel strongly about maintaining a good work/life balance while still taking the work seriously.

Job Duties
The Organizer will report to the Executive Director and Lead Organizer and collaborate in developing and executing the union’s organizing program. Duties will include workplace mapping, recruiting union reps and activists, training members on organizing practices, working with members on internal and external communications, and, if the position is extended into 2026, preparing for the next RUNAP contract campaign. Future potential for new organizing.

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior labor organizing experience, internal or external, required.
  • Healthcare organizing experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience dealing with the NLRB preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good note-taking and database management.
  • Strategic research experience a plus but not required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Proficiency in English required. Proficiency in other languages, including Spanish or Tagalog, a plus but not required.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a working car within the first month of employment.

Compensation
Salary: $70,000 – $90,000, commensurate with experience

Benefits: Reimbursement for health insurance premium up to $1,000/month; 401(k) with 5% employer contribution; paid leave includes vacation, sick time, and holidays; cell phone and mileage reimbursement also provided.

Relocation assistance or temporary housing for the duration of the contract available for out-of-town applicants.
