Job Title: Deputy General Counsel
Location: Hybrid work
Starting Salary: Dependent on Experience, $140,000 – $180,000 annually
University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE-CWA 9119) is searching for a Deputy General Counsel to support our Union’s work throughout California. The successful candidate for this position will be an experienced attorney with a demonstrated commitment to the labor movement.
UPTE-CWA represents more than 25,000 employees working in healthcare, research and technical jobs at the University of California and Lawrence Berkeley Lab, as well as adjunct faculty at Butte Community College, College of Sequoias and Mount San Jacinto Community College. We represent a diverse workforce all over California and are working to build member power and aggressively represent our members and advocate for the rights of working people.
DUTIES:
- Represent the union in a variety of areas, including PERB, state and federal litigation, and arbitrations
- Support contract negotiations, draft contract language and requests for information and consult on bargaining strategy
- Help develop and implement a Unionwide legal strategy and program. This includes preparing legal documents for (and appearing in) hearings before PERB (a majority of our practice), courts, and arbitrators
- Help provide training for staff and member leaders
- Provide support and counsel to member leaders and bargaining teams regarding strategic, representational, organizing, and bargaining issues
- Coordinate with and assign Union work to outside legal counsel
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of three years of experience as a practicing attorney in labor law (preferably with some public sector experience).
- Juris Doctor (JD) and membership in the CA state bar.
- Experience in administrative proceedings and/or arbitration hearings.
- Strong interpersonal, analytical, communication, legal research, writing and organizational skills.
- Proven ability to work with diverse group of people, from union members to union staff and leaders to elected officials to other community and issue stakeholders;
- Commitment to building a Militant, Progressive, and Democratic labor movement
Compensation: Starting salary range of $140,000 – $180,000 commensurate with experience, and an excellent benefits package including a 14% 401k match, all university holidays, auto allowance, and flexible work arrangements.
