Business Agent / Organizer

Teamsters Local 1932 is one of the largest public employee labor unions in California representing county, municipal and other local government agency employees in the Inland Empire region for over 75 years. In addition to public sector, Teamsters Local 1932 also represents a large variety of private sector employees including some in the Cannabis industry. Teamsters Local 1932 is a pilar in the community of San Bernardino and has a strong membership of 14,000 members.
Teamsters Local 1932 is currently seeking a full-time Business Agent/Organizer.
Description of Duties
- Work independently with little to no supervision representing members in the areas of wages, benefits and working conditions; Prepare and present grievance and arbitration cases as the principal Union advocate
- Represent the Union in meet and confer issues; participate in various aspects of negotiations on behalf of the members
- May act as lead negotiator in bargaining with public & private sector employers
- Assess, groom and train union stewards who can assist members in solving problems on the job through contract enforcement and direct action
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with labor relations counterparts, elected officials, local labor leaders, and community organizations
- Facilitate special and general membership meetings; attend various meetings in the region such as City Council, School Board, and County Supervisors'; budget hearings, community meetings and political events
- Plan and direct internal and external organizing campaigns for ongoing union membership recruitment efforts, contract renewal, and the ongoing recruitment of work site leaders for projects and committees, as well as potential volunteer projects within the region
- Welcome new members and provide in person orientation
- Develop expertise on employment trends, regional issues and communicate with the Secretary-Treasurer, fellow Business Agents, and shop stewards
- Ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective working relationships
- Conduct research, compile, interpret, analyze data, and make recommendations
- Develop, implement and drive worksite and community mobilization strategies; Ability to manage campaigns both large and small
- Prepare leaflets, bulletins, etc. for communication with membership
- Prepare and submits regular and ad hoc reports on regional activities as required
- Serves as a liaison to other unions, labor coalitions, etc.
Minimum Requirements
- Knowledge of State acts and legislation governing the collective bargaining rights of public sector employees required.
- Experience preparing and presenting grievance and arbitration cases as the principal Union advocate
- Experience with internal and external organizing campaigns
- Experience working for an International Union or very large local Union across multiple bargaining units or shops
- College degree in labor-related field preferred; or extensive experience and demonstrated ability in labor relations, labor organizing or related work
- Must possess effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks
- Ability to lead and support organizational change efforts for large complex organizations
- Strong public speaking skills and experience communicating union messages a must
- Computer proficiency with database/spreadsheet, email, internet, word processing, & social media
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent listening, interpersonal, and problem solving skills
- Ability to work long and irregular hours and weekends
- Ability to travel as needed, and for extended periods
- Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and automobile for business use is required
Desirable Qualifications
Experience acting as a chief negotiator in bargaining and experience leading organizing campaigns
College degree in labor-related field; or extensive experience and demonstrated ability in labor relations, labor organizing or related work.
