Internal Organizer
Private Sector Human Services Division
Based in Marlborough, MA
SEIU Local 509 is a progressive union organizing and representing human service workers and educators in Massachusetts. We are currently seeking to hire a new full time permanent Internal Organizer, with contract negotiation experience, to represent private sector human service workers. A successful applicant will join a team of 7 experienced negotiators. Position will remain open until filled.
Goals: Represent the lowest paid human service workers in Massachusetts. Build worker power to beat the bosses at the bargaining table to raise wages for workers and improve benefits. Organize workers so they are ready to strike when needed.
General Statement of Duties:
- Develop leaders and educate/train officers, steward and members
- Negotiate contracts
- Monitor and ensure contract compliance
- Attend Labor / Management meetings
- Support organizing of non-union human service workers
- Support building political power for human service workers
- Organize members to get participation in union actions and decisions
- Perform related work as required
Qualifications:
- Candidates should have previous experience organizing (union or worker organizing strongly preferred) and/or bargaining
- Strong commitment to the labor movement and workers
- Experience working in human services, or with human service workers preferred
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (listening, speaking, and writing)
- Ability to to work both independently and as part of a team, particularly with people from diverse backgrounds
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities at the same time, be proactive and maintain flexibility, adaptability, and demonstrate a willingness to learn
- Must have strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
- Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends
- Possession of an insured, registered vehicle and a valid drivers' license are required
Supervision Received:
Works under the supervision of the Private Sector Coordinator, who reviews work for effectiveness, timeliness, accuracy and conformance with rules and regulations.
Supervision Exercised:
May supervise interns directly; may provide functional supervision for other employees or members on per diem.
Compensation and Benefits:
Effective 1/1/25: $88,426 – $100,172 depending on experience/qualifications with excellent benefits.
