Overview:
NYSUT seeks an experienced Organizer whose pivotal role is strengthening our union and empowering our members. This position will focus on leadership identification and development; will cultivate leaders into powerful activists and organizers. You will drive recruitment initiatives, expanding membership through strategic planning and member-led campaigns. Successful candidates will utilize both traditional and digital tools to engage and mobilize our members. This role demands a dynamic individual with a commitment to empowering workers and driving meaningful change.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop and lead worker mobilizations for internal and external organizing efforts.
- Identify worker leaders and transform them into activists.
- Build worksite structures for engagement and mobilization.
- Engage in worksite activities, home visits, and other organizing meetings.
- Assist with developing strategies and plans to recruit and retain members.
- Train and support cadres of member organizers to recruit new members.
- Maintain regular communication with leaders, members, and others through union meetings, job site visits, one-on-one meetings, and house visits.
- Help create and implement digital and other forms of outreach to individual workers and groups of workers.
- Design, write and manage campaigns, including digital engagement forms and online actions.
- Create and manage a social media content calendar.
- Create campaign literature and tools used in organizing campaigns.
- Promote strength building and growth to current and potential members and leaders and guide their activity on behalf of the union.
- Assist other staff and members with strategies for negotiations, campaigns, organizing, and other union programs.
- Help organize and run large actions such as picket lines, strikes, and marches.
- Identify and builds effective organizing committees.
- Develop and implement successful tactics to win union organizing elections.
- Maintain complete records in all phases of an organizing campaign and oversee the assessment of every unit member involved in a campaign.
- Build community support for campaigns.
- Run effective meetings.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- Must have 3 to 5 years of relevant organizing/servicing/educational experience.
- Knowledge of labor unions and labor relations at a professional level.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and coordinate organizing activities and worker mobilizations.
- Timely record keeping and reporting.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain productive work relationships with workers, members, and colleagues.
- Strong research skills and experience gathering information for organizing campaigns.
- Effective communication skills, orally and in writing.
- Strong planning and time management skills.
- Commitment to professional development.
- Proficiency in relevant technological tools such as Google Suite, WhatsApp, Slack, Hustle, Action Builder, VAN, etc.
- Willingness and ability to be in the field for work assignments.
- Willingness and ability to work irregular hours, including evenings and occasional weekends, as needed.
- Experience utilizing digital organizing tactics preferred.
