Assistant National Representatives
Federal Division

The National Association of Government Employees, SEIU, seeks to fill several Assistant National Representative vacancies within the Federal Division. Assistant National Representatives (ANR) within the Federal Division report to the Federal Director. ANRs are responsible for all matters related to collective bargaining, including organizing workers; compiling, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting pertinent data; bargaining issues for assigned locals; processing grievances and representing workers in employment-related matters.

Cities With Regular Openings:
This is a hybrid remote position (NAGE Federal Division is located in Alexandria, VA). There are regular openings include but are not limited to Washington (DC), Missouri, California, and South Carolina. Applicants can indicate your geographic preference(s) when applying for the position.

Responsibilities:

  • Advising, assisting, training and/or participating in all aspects of the negotiations and grievance processes including, but not limited to, arbitration.
  • Representing workers in various matters, including grievance, discrimination complaints, employee disciplinary hearings, unfair labor practice charges, and other administrative hearings.
  • Organizing the local workplace by signing up new members, assisting workers in collaborating for direct action, and informing workers of the benefits of membership in the Union.
  • Plays a major leadership role in the institution to create an effective Labor Union movement to strengthen the local union leadership.
  • Providing advice, coordination and assistance to workers and job stewards on matters of wages, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
  • Ability to independently manage difficult and complex issues in labor relations matters.
  • Ability to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to exercise skills in interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to establish rapport with and organize members in widely diversified ethnic, social, and economic groups.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Successfully work independently, meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Experience and Educational Requirements:

  • College degree preferred, but not required.
  • Significant and specialized experience may be substituted for educational requirements.
  • Two years of related labor relations experience.
  • Knowledge of and understanding of unions and the labor movement, union organizing practices and basic labor law.
  • Leadership and motivational skills.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Effective oral and written communications.

Other:

  • Work is performed in a variety of worksite locations. Regular and occasional overnight travel may be required, usually less than one-third (1/3) of the work time.
  • Extended hours may be required.
  • Must be able to transport and lift a variety of boxes, bags and materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license required. Willing to complete a background check.

Pay and Appointment:
Salary: Up to thirty $30.00 dollars per hour depending upon experience. Up to 30 hour per week commitment. Temporary with the potential to become a permanent position.
