Overview
The Labor Relations Associate (LRA) position is a high-level, developmental role for candidates seeking a career path in Labor Relations. The LRA will work closely with members of the regional labor relations staff under the supervision of the Regional Staff Director along with the support of a staff Mentor.
On a daily basis, the LRA will accompany and collaborate with regional staff in support of their advocacy of NYSUT’s affiliated local unions and their members.
The LRA will promote the image and vision of the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT, NEA-AFT) and the American Labor Movement, and support advocacy on behalf of affiliates and members and the institutions in which they work, support the growth and strength of NYSUT locals.
The LRA position is fully, in-person, with time spent in the regional office in Rochester as well as participating in daily field activities.
As a temporary, developmental role, this position will terminate no later than March 6, 2026. Successful performance in LRA position will be considered in candidacy for permanent Labor Relations Specialist positions.
Primary Responsibilities
Working closely with the Regional Staff Director and Mentor, the Associate will:
- Promote the image and goals of NYSUT and the American Labor Movement by representing the organization in a variety of activities involving local affiliates, and in the political and legislative arenas.
- Develop the skills for promoting strategic approaches for affiliated locals in their interaction with their members.
- Develop skills for utilizing strategic approaches for member engagement and building the capacity of local affiliates to meet the workplace needs of their members, engage in political action, community service, social justice and professional development initiatives, and participating in regional, state and national events, programs and governance.
- Develop skills that will support labor relations activities including collective bargaining, contract administration and legal advocacy.
- Develop skills that will support locals identifying workplace issues as opportunities for organizing and engaging members, particularly when there is no apparent legal solution.
- Develop skills to support organizing of unrepresented and unaffiliated workers.
- Be committed to the process of life-long learning and demonstrate a desire for continuous professional self-improvement and knowledge attainment.
- Develop an understanding of the work life of members and assist local unions in recognizing responsibilities in both professional issues and union activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must have a valid Driver’s License and a personal vehicle available for business use.
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills, including public speaking
- Pro-union and advocate for the rights of working people
- Energetic self-starter
- Ability to establish and maintain positive work relationships with supervisor, co-workers and others
- Flexible regarding work responsibilities and working conditions
- Willing to travel and work irregular hours
- Bachelor’s degree or appropriate experience
- Expertise with electronic communications and social media
