Position Description:
UFCW is seeking an attorney with 5 to 15 years of experience in labor and employment law to work as an Assistant General Counsel in its Legal Department.
Relevant experience includes:
- Practice before the NLRB, DOL and EEOC, and other federal or state agencies
- Advising unions on the NLRA, LMDRA, LMRA, FLSA, Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA and other employment laws, immigration and First Amendment matters;
- Litigating civil actions on behalf of unions in federal or state courts, including claims arising under the NLRA, Title VII and other employment laws;
- Advising and assisting unions during organizing campaigns and on collective bargaining issues, including contract administration and grievance-arbitration; and
- Advising unions or other organizations on internal matters, including personnel and governance matters.
Applicants should have excellent writing, analytical, advocacy, communication, research and interpersonal skills.
Government experience and Spanish language proficiency are desirable.
A successful candidate must be licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia, or be licensed in another state and be able to successfully apply for admission to the DC Bar.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Advising and assisting union officers and staff on a wide range of matters, including organizing campaigns (both traditional and non-traditional), collective bargaining, strikes, defamation, governance, immigration, employment discrimination, legislative proposals, internal union issues and personnel matters.
- Representing the UFCW International Union and its local unions in proceedings before federal or state agencies and courts.
- Assisting and managing outside counsel.
- Speaking at union conferences and meetings.
- Facilitating training for union officers, staff and members.
- Travel is required.
- The successful candidate will be expected to work in-person during regular work hours in the Washington, DC office.
Compensation:
Salary range $153, 930 - $178,903, depending on relevant experience.
