Organizing Director
Based in the Los Angeles area located in Vernon, CA
The Organizing Director is responsible for the management of internal and external organizing campaigns. The Organizing Director supervises organizers who work to execute program and campaign priorities of the Executive Director and Executive Board. The OD works under the supervision of the Executive Director and with other departments as necessary.
Overview of Responsibilities:
- Work with the Executive Director to develop the union’s organizing and growth plans.
- Identify and organize external jurisdictions and employers throughout southern California. Areas of focus include non-profits, cultural workers, and local municipalities.
- Develop organizing campaign plans with the goals, strategies, and tactics necessary to execute the plan, including effective management of staff and members.
- Work with staff and volunteer member organizers to develop and drive campaigns.
- Work with appropriate staff to develop year-round work plans and regular reporting mechanisms for assigned staff.
- Develop internal and external organizing growth plans.
- Mobilize members to participate in Local and Council actions.
- Develop and implement strategies to streamline resources to support organizing campaign activity.
- Work with Local officers to develop and assist with internal organizing campaigns, including organizing blitzes.
- Keeps the Executive Director informed on a regular basis regarding issues that affect departmental or Council objectives.
- Prepare and submit regular and ad hoc reports as requested.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Competencies:
- At least 5 years of experience in a Director or Lead Organizer capacity. Consideration will also be given to significant previous union experience such as representation, organizing and/or political action; prior management experience; and/or considerable related experiences.
- Extensive experience managing staff and diverse staff teams.
- Demonstrated ability to build and motivate teams and work effectively in a team environment in both a lead and support role.
- Demonstrated success in running and winning organizing campaigns.
- Experience in creating and managing an organizing budget.
- Advanced knowledge of labor unions, particularly AFSCME, and organizing as well as labor laws, both public and private sector.
- Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships.
- Ability to work independently within context of a plan.
- Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing campaigns and personal work plans and goals.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to travel on a regular basis as needed, and for extended periods of time.
- Computer proficiency is required: including VAN, database/spreadsheet, PowerPoint.
- Bilingual a plus.
