Starbucks Lead Organizer
Based in the Bay Area/Northern CA
The Western States Regional Joint Board of Workers United-SEIU is the union backing Starbucks Workers United throughout the Southwest. We are a growing, progressive union of 10,000 workers at warehouses, industrial laundries, and other jobs in California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico.
Job Title: Lead Organizer
Location: Bay Area/Northern CA
Lead Organizers are responsible for leading a team of Organizers, driving forward the team’s work of recruiting and developing strong leaders among Starbucks workers, and building an organized, militant membership capable of fighting for justice and winning power in their workplaces and communities.
This position is for a Lead Organizer to be based in Northern CA, with a preference for the Bay Area, with a starting assignment on the Starbucks Workers United campaign. Some moving expenses may be reimbursed if necessary.
Responsibilities include:
- Leads & trains a team of organizing staff and member organizers, develops work plans and skills development plans for the organizing team, and develops and executes campaign tactics together with the Campaign Coordinator.
- Recruit, train, and develop union leaders from among workers at non-union workplaces, including by house visits and workplace visits.
- Build representative worker committees capable of mobilizing co-workers to action and leading campaigns to organize their workplaces.
- Maintain databases with updated and accurate information from organizing campaigns.
- Create and carry out external organizing plans for multiple workplaces, design print & digital campaign materials, and research companies targets by organizing campaigns, with guidance from the Organizing Director and or Campaign Coordinator.
- Promptly return phone calls and emails.
- Assist with internal organizing efforts as needed.
- Driving, travel, and irregular/extended hours.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a Union Organizer (External); experience leading a team, experience in both Internal and External organizing, including making house calls, building member committees, and maintaining organizing data.
- Ability to motivate and inspire working people to action.
- Track record of leading successful teams.
- Experience training and developing staff.
- Basic knowledge of labor law and union organizing principles. Have a familiarity with card check and union elections for recognition.
- Experience with workplace mapping and leadership ID.
- Comfortable using computers and other digital devices to update organizing databases, create leaflets, correspond with e-mail, and scan documents.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and car required.
Language: Bilingual Spanish & English is preferred but not required.
Compensation: Salary for this position is $75,000 commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits include $700 monthly car allowance in addition to reimbursement of gas and car insurance; phone reimbursement; fully employer-paid family health, dental, and vision insurance; a generous paid time off package; fully employer-paid pension retirement plan; life insurance; and other benefits outlined in a staff union contract.
