Human Resources Director
Based in Lansing, MI
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Human Resources Director will lead, develop, and manage all aspects of the Michigan AFL-CIO’s human resources operations. This role will oversee the HR Specialist and HR Generalist, ensuring efficient onboarding, offboarding, and other key HR processes and procedures. The HR Director will work closely with senior leadership to align HR strategies with the organization’s mission while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Manage and provide leadership to the HR Specialist and HR Generalist.
- Oversee daily HR operations, ensuring smooth workflow and compliance.
- Coordinate with management to conduct performance evaluations and provide professional development opportunities.
- Address employee relations matters, including discipline and terminations, in accordance with company policies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for onboarding, offboarding, employee relations, benefits administration, and compliance.
- Ensure a seamless and positive employee experience through effective HR processes.
- Maintain compliance with employment laws and regulations, updating policies as necessary.
- Lead organizational efforts related to staffing, recruitment, and retention strategies.
- Oversee performance management, training, and professional development programs.
- Analyze HR metrics and trends to improve organizational effectiveness.
- Provide guidance to leadership on HR best practices and workplace culture initiatives.
- Administer benefits, compensation, and leave programs.
- Oversee the disciplinary process, including conducting investigations, resolving disputes, and ensuring fair and consistent application of policies and procedures.
- Develop and maintain the employee handbook and policies to ensure they reflect current procedures, comply with local, state, and federal laws, and align with applicable collective bargaining agreements.
- Ensure all HR policies and procedures are communicated effectively to employees and management, providing training as needed to ensure understanding and compliance.
- Maintain effective relationships with employee labor organization(s) and oversee the collective bargaining process, including negotiation, administration, and interpretation of all labor contracts.
- Support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Minimum of five years of HR management experience.
- SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, or equivalent certification preferred.
- Strong knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
- Experience managing and mentoring HR staff.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Preferred familiarity with HR and project management systems, including ADP, Trakstar, Concur, Asana, and Employee Navigator.
SALARY: $80,000 - $100,000
