Communications Coordinator

Based in Joliet and/or Chicago, IL

 

Warehouse Workers for Justice (WWJ) is a worker center fighting for good, living wage jobs among the thousands of logistics workers in the Chicagoland and Will County area, the largest intermodal logistics hub in the United States. The Communications Coordinator will play a key role in shaping the overarching digital engagement strategy for WWJ, in close consultation with other members of the programmatic and organizing departments. They will be responsible for maintaining our social media platforms, help recruit and sustain members of WWJ, and support other communication needs with media and press as needed. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment and ability to convey our organizational mission, values, and objectives. They would be able to demonstrate an ability to achieve results in a fast-paced and dynamic campaigning environment, while balancing short and long-term organizational priorities. At this time, this is a part-time position paid hourly.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop strategies for reaching warehouse workers online through mediums such as Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Signal, comment sections, and other social and professional media platforms.
  • Develop short-term and long-term plans to recruit new WWJ members digitally and turn out to in-person member meetings and events.
  • Support, through digital efforts, on ongoing or potential workplace organizing campaigns and online workshops for program deliverables.
  • Provide monthly analytic reports on usage and traffic for program deliverables and administrative purposes.
  • Develop and create graphics for announcements, campaigns, flyers for physical mediums or online distribution, and our website.
  • Maintain communication to media and press as needed and support with interviews, as well as prepping members for media appearances.
  • Collaborate with the organizing and programs team to create and digitally distribute monthly member newsletter.
  • Attend regular staff meetings with supervisors and other organizers to discuss campaign progress, goals, and campaign activities.
  • Attend community events in Chicago, Cook County and Will County to represent WWJ.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • At least 2 years of communications experience
  • At least 1 to 2 years experience in community and/or labor organizing.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English a plus, to include excellent written/verbal communication skills and ability to interpret/translate;
  • Experience with Facebook Live, Instagram, Zoom, Twitter, Canva, Signal, Whatsapp, and other online forums where workers congregate; as well as experience of running Facebook ad campaigns and/or other paid digital programs;
  • Ability to work with a diverse population;
  • Motivated, professional, and detail-oriented;
  • Be able to work independently while being able to incorporate constructive feedback from supervisors;
  • Be able to work on a team;
  • Accepts performance-based criticism and directions;
  • Outreach duties require work during regular office hours and some nights and weekends. Additionally, employee must be able to drive or travel within Will County and Chicagoland area on occasion.

The hourly salary for this position is between $24 and $26 per hour; compensation also includes phone reimbursement up to $110 per month. The expected working hours are 20 – 30 hours per week, depending on the schedule of events.
