About Us:
The Alphabet Workers Union is a progressive, member-led union organizing workers at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. Bringing workers together using innovative direct-join tactics, we represent over a thousand dues-paying members at Google and associated vendors and contractors. We are a proud local union of the Communications Workers of America and affiliated with CODE-CWA (Campaign to Organize Digital Employees), the driving force uniting tech workers across North America.
Job Summary:
AWU seeks a Communications Coordinator who will be responsible for formulating a communications strategy that contributes to building power for our members and effectively communicating the Union’s vision to the public. To fill this role requires a skilled, experienced professional who can work creatively to develop incisive messaging, implement paid and earned media strategies, enhance the union’s online presence, improve the efficiency of internal systems, and serve personally as a consistent and compelling spokesperson for the work of the union.
Experience and Education:
- 5+ years relevant professional communications experience
- Experience in a labor union staff role and communicating with or at major Fortune 500 companies
- Strong technology/digital infrastructure acumen
- Familiarity with the tech industry and/or tech workers’ issues
Examples of Job Duties:
- Developing and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy that fully utilizes all available resources to build worker power
- Fielding media inquiries and pitching stories and op-eds to mainstream and unconventional media outlets
- Producing written content for major social media platforms, member newsletters, and other forms of digital consumption
- Contributing content to the union’s website and designing an effective action- oriented site that tells the story of the union
- Identifying, training, preparing, and directing workers to be effective spokespersons
- Producing content for field organizing like leaflets, flyers, and other materials
Skills Required:
- Excellent written communication skills and confidence in generating written and visual content for publication and public consumption
- Experience with graphic design and video editing platforms, various web platforms, mass email systems, or the ability to be trained on additional software as needed
- Demonstrated design and visual/graphic communication skills
- Ability to support workers and staff organizers to develop and maintain cohesive, collaborative organizing committees
- Ability to understand and assimilate comprehensive knowledge of Alphabet workers’ work life, training, terminology and their role within Alphabet operations
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with experience and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrated commitment to economic and social justice
- Dedication to empowering workers and supporting a democratic member-led union
- Drive to develop and practice new skills to maximize effectiveness in role
- Willingness to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends on occasion
Work Requirements:
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Capacity to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
Salary and Benefits:
The salary range for this position is: $81,723 – $99,620
CWA Local 9009 offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package including Medical, Dental, Vision, Short and Long-Term Disability Insurance, Life Insurance, and 401(k) retirement benefits. Location premium pay is available to employees in high-cost areas.
