Organizing and Training Director
Based in Northern or Southern California offices and in the field
(travel to Sacramento and other areas of the state is required)

The California Federation of Labor Unions represents over 1,300 affiliate unions in California that collectively represent 2.3 million union members in trucking, retail, hospitality, and other service sector jobs, janitorial, construction, health care, local and state government, education, arts and entertainment, warehousing and logistics, manufacturing, and a variety of other sectors.
The Organizing and Training Director will work closely with central labor councils and affiliate unions to help strengthen capacity to win organizing and contract campaigns and build power for working people.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate with unions and labor councils to help develop and implement priority statewide and regional campaigns;
- Provide strategic, planning, and mobilization support to affiliates and central labor councils on organizing campaigns, contract campaigns, local actions, and initiatives in specific regions and/or industries;
- Track and stay apprised of affiliates’ contract fights, strikes, organizing campaigns and identify opportunities to provide resources and support;
- Develop the curriculum and content for Federation convenings and meetings;
- Lead the planning and facilitation of statewide trainings for workers, unions, staff, central labor councils, etc;
- Help workers and new organizers access career pathways in the labor movement;
- Work with central labor councils and unions on implementation of field programs, including organizing blitzes, worksite education, phone banks, volunteer recruitment, etc.;
- Track and respond to incoming organizing leads and coordinate with appropriate affiliate unions;
- Regularly convene Organizing Directors and key organizing staff across the state;
- Ensure completion of grant deliverables and reporting requirements where applicable;
- Provide staffing support to the Federation’s leaders in the field;
- Provide staffing support and help with planning and mobilizing turnout for the Federation’s annual conferences, events, and convenings.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- 6-10+ years of relevant experience working with unions and central labor councils, including leading direct worker organizing, training, and mobilization;
- Prior experience leading and facilitating organizing trainings strongly preferred;
- Prior experience supervising organizers, trainers, or other staff preferred;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Demonstrated success working in fast-paced environments – both individually and collaborating as part of a team;
- Ability to take initiative, identify new opportunities to engage and add value to central labor councils and affiliate programs, and prioritize multiple tasks and time-sensitive assignments.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
The annual salary for this position is $120,000. Includes excellent full family medical, dental, and vision benefits and a defined-benefit pension plan.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Organizing and Training Director reports to the Chief of Staff. Job duties are expected to be performed in-person at the Federation’s Northern or Southern California offices and in the field. Travel to Sacramento and other areas of the state is required.
Majority of time will be spent in the field, supporting the work of central labor councils and affiliate unions. Evening and weekend work required. This includes significant driving and travel time, driver’s license and access to a car is required. Work on political or electoral campaigns may require longer-term stay in jurisdiction.
