Communications Specialist

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Communications Director, the Communications Specialist is responsible for providing strong writing, editing and messaging support to the union’s campaigns, programs and projects. The Communications Specialist contributes to strategic planning and executes all aspects of communications in support of our organizing, legislative, and contract bargaining campaigns.

DUTIES:

  • Write, edit, and implement member communications, including copy for email blasts, mass texts, leaflets, social media, direct mail, and website.
  • Work with communications and field staff to develop overall campaign messaging and create and execute strategic communications plans for organizing, legislative, issue advocacy, collective bargaining, electoral, and other union campaigns.
  • Write media advisories, news releases, statements, fact sheets, op-eds, talking points, and other public messaging materials
  • Pitch stories to media and respond to media inquiries
  • Prepare workers to speak with the news media;
  • Plan and organize media events
  • Assist with event production, staging, scriptwriting, and preparing speakers for union meetings and other events
  • Write, create content, and develop strategic content calendars for social media platforms, digital advertising, and other digital communications
  • Train and develop member spokespeople
  • Assist with photography and video production

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Excellent written communications skills, including the ability to quickly synthesize and distill complex information into a concise, informative and digestible format
  • Ability to write effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment with short deadlines
  • Demonstrated interviewing skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Strong skills and experience in framing issues for specific audiences and developing simple and effective advocacy materials
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher); familiarity with Canva
  • Experience with Mailchimp, Scale-To-Win, WordPress, Gravity Forms a plus
  • Flexibility to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Understanding of and commitment to SEIU Local 99’s members and mission
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize multiple tasks and time-sensitive assignments;
  • Ability to speak and write in Spanish a big plus.

EXPERIENCE

  • At least two years in campaign communications, labor communications, public affairs, community organizing, journalism or related fields
  • Experience writing and developing social media content and calendars (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, other emerging platforms)
  • Demonstrated experience in performing pro-active media outreach and generating positive media coverage.
  • Familiarity with labor / community organizing
  • A demonstrated knowledge of websites, social networking, email and blogging
  • Experience conceptualizing, shooting and editing video for quick use in social media

REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong commitment to progressive social change and activism and understands and commits to SEIU Local 99’s members and mission
  • Work long, varied hours including evenings and some weekends
  • Maintain a valid Driver’s License, current auto insurance, and reliable automobile

Salary range: $71,219.20 – $80,157.84 per CBA negotiated rates.
