The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is a strong, progressive, militant union with a million active and retired members. The UAW Research Department is responsible for in-depth analyses of companies, industries, and the economy. From contract costing and COLA proposals, to identifying industry trends and policy shifts, the Department’s analyses are used to support bargaining, organizing, and policy campaigns.

The UAW Research Department’s Research Director is responsible for setting department priorities, supervising and directing staff, directly working on high priority projects, and providing reports to the President and International Executive Board (IEB).

Job Description & Key Duties:

  • Provide in-depth, critical analysis and interpretation of corporate financial, and economic and social data in support of union activities, including collective bargaining, organizing, education, communications, and legislative activities.
  • Assign, support, and review strategic research done by staff in support of union organizing, policy campaigns, and collective bargaining with employers.
  • Manage work and implement organizational policies for research and clerical staff assigned to the department.
  • Function as an integral part of contract negotiations teams with various industries by reviewing financial and labor cost data and gathered intelligence from both internal and external sources to develop and evaluate bargaining proposals.
  • Engage with outside agencies, policy makers, organizations, and companies.
  • Participate in the development and evaluation of social, economic, and collective bargaining policies of the Union.
  • Prepare materials for and give presentations to a wide variety of audiences including leadership.
  • Assist other UAW departments in developing collective bargaining policies and preparing position papers.
  • Understand, and be able to communicate, the function of the UAW and both the internal and external labor movement.

Job Requirements (Education/Skills/Experience)

  • Masters’s degree, professional degree or higher
  • 8+ years of experience doing research and/or financial analysis related to corporations, politics, supply chains, and/or public policy.
  • Knowledge of key industries, supply chains, or regulatory issues related to UAW.
  • Experience in providing technical assistance for labor union negotiations, including but not limited to wage analysis, cost estimation, and analysis.
  • Ability/experience analyzing financial statements, industry reports, legislation, or legal documents.
  • Strong ability to train and mentor others. Experience coordinating work by staff and provide feedback including aptitude for developing staff and fostering strong teams.
  • Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and prior research experience in academic, labor, community, or political settings.
  • Ability to present and communicate detailed and complicated information effectively.
  • Proficient in quantitative analysis and possession of strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Flexibility to work long hours, including nights and weekends, including willingness to travel.
  • An unwavering commitment to building a fighting, member-led union.
  • Ability to work well and creatively under tight deadlines in a team environment and independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks within a high-pressure environment and meet unpredictable deadlines.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and discretion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new platforms as needed.

Salary and Benefits
This is a full-time staff position based in Detroit, Michigan. The UAW offers a competitive salary of $166,000.00 along with best-in-class health, retirement, and paid time off benefits.
