Local 47
Director of Organizing
Based in Los Angeles, CA
(with the ability to travel within the U.S. and Canada)
Purpose:
- Create, develop, and lead the Organizing Department of the AFM Local 47 to plan and implement internal and external organizing campaigns in various sectors of professional music locally, while working with the International Union on unionwide campaigns of strategic significance in Southern California.
- Establish strategies and systems to support and build both the organizing department and a broad network utilizing both National and Local union assets.
- Plan and execute AFM organizing-focused education initiatives to embed the culture of organizing in Local 47.
- Supervise staff in the organizing department.
- Work with a commitment to worker’s rights and social justice.
- Work with Local 47 officers to develop a strategic plan for growth and member defense, including member mobilization around legislative and social change.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a plan for a successful bylaws amendment change to ensure Local 47’s transition to an organizing model local.
- Plan and lead internal organizing campaigns, including contract campaigns, legislative member mobilization, rank and file leadership development, member education, and strike support.
- Design and direct external organizing efforts.
- Provide regular supervision and guidance to staff in the organizing department.
- Cultivate relationships with community, labor and political leaders and organizations.
- Report to the Local 47 President, carrying out Executive Board policies and objectives.
Primary Qualifications:
- Demonstrated success in leading union campaigns (e.g., NLRB elections, ballot initiatives)
- Experience in leading union organizing campaigns, and/or community organizing campaigns, including the design and development of campaign work plans.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of union organizing and an excellent knowledge of labor law.
- Ability to supervise staff and build an organizing department and network with allies.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Able to work independently while coordinating efforts with national and local leaders.
- Work under pressure and prioritize tasks. Ability to travel.
- Excellent verbal and written skills and basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Familiarity with the music and entertainment industry.

Salary range: $90,000.00-$100,000.00 with an excellent benefits package.
