POSITION: Executive Director
LOCATION: Charlotte County, Florida (Port Charlotte)—one school district, two unions
UNIT DESCRIPTION: The Sunset Coast Service Unit represents all teachers and support employees of the Charlotte County School District through two unions: Charlotte FEA (CFEA) represents all instructional employees (625 members out of potential 1,129); Charlotte County Support Personnel Association (CCSPA) represents 328 members out of potential 983). The Service Unit must maintain a membership of 1,250 to remain a local option stand alone Service Unit. The District and the Unions enjoy a collaborative approach to bargaining and contract issues. Both Unions have a strong elected leadership and a strong and viable Building Rep structure throughout the District. The unions are active in training and collaborate with the District to provide every employee in the District with Interest Based Problem Solving Training by FMCS. The position of Executive Director is the only paid staff position for the Service Unit; no secretarial services are provided by employed personnel.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitor and coordinate local association program implementation, including communications, training, employee relations, minority concerns, instructional and professional learning, membership promotion, political concerns, legislation, etc.
- Assist with local bargaining and contract enforcement.
- Plan, participate in and present in site-based rep training.
- Conduct regular visits to work sites.
- Assist leaders in developing organizing plans and create a system to measure effectiveness.
- Assist in local program development, budgeting and political action/legislative initiatives and any other areas for which the local seeks assistance.
- Maintain a positive relationship with local leaders, coordinating council members within the unit and other organizations and groups within the assigned areas.
- Provide services to local leaders as requested and perform other Service Unit duties as determined by Sunset Coast Service Unit.
QUALIFICATIONS: BA/BS Degree and advanced degree (s) preferred. Have demonstrated ability in interpersonal skills, and experience in staff management, operations management, and public relations. The highly qualified candidate will have experience in labor relations, governance and education policy as well as contract maintenance and grievance processing including arbitration. Have strong background in building strategic partnerships that will advance the organization, and have experience in collective bargaining and growing membership in the organizations.
WAGES/BENEFITS: To be discussed: preference for Independent Contractor Agreement. This is NOT an FEA state Service Unit position nor is it under the FSO contract.
