Director of Human Resources

Based in Upper Marlboro, MD

 

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is a trade union representing 600,000 active and retired members in the aerospace, defense, airline, manufacturing, transportation, woodworking, health care and other industries in North America. The IAM seeks a director to lead the Human Resources Department, and report to the IAM General Secretary Treasurer.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources Department
  • Support union operations by maintaining and updating office systems and procedures including but not limited to hiring, terminating, promoting and transferring employees
  • Ensure adherence to IAM policies and the IAM employment handbook
  • Ensure adherence to the collective bargaining agreements applicable to IAM employees
  • Assist IAM Directors and Managers in supervising their staff
  • Assist IAM Directors with hiring objectives
  • Foster professional development for employees
  • Promote a work culture consistent with the IAM union’s mission and values
  • Foster a safe work environment in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
  • Assist with development of reasonable workplace accommodations
  • Handle employee concerns and complaints
  • Mediate and assist to resolve employee disputes
  • Maintain employee confidence by ensuring confidentiality of human resources information
  • Manage compensation and benefit package information and interface with benefit providers
  • Coordinate with various IAM service providers
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Preferred Experience:

  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of the labor movement, and IAM union values
  • Ability to carry out multiple simultaneous projects in line with established policies and procedures
  • Proven ability to communicate and collaborate with colleagues
  • Ability to work with little supervision, and quickly adjust priorities
  • Ability to problem solve issues
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Experience maintaining adherence to collective bargaining agreements
  • Experience in human resources, management and supervision preferred
