Position Summary
The CU Housestaff Association (HSA) was founded in 1969 and represents nearly 1,300 resident doctors and fellows (housestaff) across the University of Colorado hospitals and affiliates.
HSA is seeking a full-time Organizing Coordinator with a passion for worker power to grow the membership and engagement of our organization by leading our member and digital organizing efforts among housestaff in the CU Graduate School of Medicine. Ideal candidates have more than three years of organizing experience in meet-and-confer and collective bargaining contexts, as well as experience organizing to win collective bargaining.
The Organizing Coordinator will be accountable to and supported by the elected leadership of HSA and HSA Campaign Coordinator and responsible for implementing programs as directed by the leadership and democratic all-membership votes.
In this position, the Organizing Coordinator will be responsible for organizing housestaff throughout the University of Colorado School of Medicine by developing recruitment and leadership development strategies. The Organizing Coordinator will manage issue and collective bargaining campaigns that improve material conditions for all rank-and-file members, and build unity and solidarity amongst all workers across departments and job titles.
As Organizing Coordinator, you will be expected to build organizing committees, develop leaders, work with local staff and union members to develop trainings and workshops, develop and execute plans for issue and collective bargaining campaigns, and coordinate the organization’s communications plans.
Responsibilities:
- Overall: Lead efforts in campaign strategy, leadership identification and development, member engagement, and internal/external communications for the organization.
- Coordinate with the leadership and Organizing Committee in developing strategy and support for issue campaigns, collective bargaining campaigns, and other campaign tactics.
- Coordinate the communications program alongside HSA Communications Consultant, including developing and maintaining a robust social media presence and ensuring consistent and strategic communication with members.
- Conduct 1:1 phone or in-person organizing conversations to grow the Organizing Committee and engage members in campaigns for improving working conditions and collective bargaining.
- Facilitate leadership development efforts including organizing trainings and workshops.
To meet the diverse needs of organizing our membership, you will be asked to work irregular and sometimes long hours, including early mornings, late evenings, and occasional weekends. Your essential functions also include significant walking, including stairs; prolonged standing; occasionally carrying materials or other containers weighing up to thirty pounds for significant distances; significant driving, including intercity and night driving; frequent need to communicate in person, via writing, via text, via telephone, and via regular computer use.
The person hired for this job should bring these qualifications:
- Three years or more of organizing experience, ideally in public sector meet-and-confer, internal organizing and collective bargaining settings
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing campaign plans for both internal and external organizing
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights, weekends, and early mornings
- Strong commitment to social justice and the labor movement
- Written and verbal communication skills, such as:
- Empathic listener
- Persuasive speaker with strong presentation skills
- Proven adaptability to differing cultural environments
- Enjoy working as a team member as well as independently
- Proficient with technology including but not limited to social media platforms, Slack, Word, Zoom, Excel, Google suite, email, text messaging, Canva Pro, and/or the ability and willingness to learn these platforms
- Strong planning and time management skills.
- Ability to work as team member, as well as take individual initiative with minimal supervision
- Proof of up-to-date COVID vaccination is a condition of employment
- Driver’s license and reliable access to transportation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity or experience with the University of Colorado system or organizing in the healthcare industry.
- Knowledge of the process of medical training for doctors in the US healthcare system.
Salary and Benefits:
The starting salary range for this position is $70,000 – $75,000. Benefits include paid vacation, family and sick leave, and retirement contribution.
