CWA Local 7799 is seeking a full-time Organizing Coordinator with a passion for worker power to grow the membership and activity of our local by overseeing the organizing program of the local and managing the local’s expanding organizing staff. Ideal candidates have more than five years of organizing experience in pre-majority and collective bargaining contexts as well as experience developing and managing staff.
The organizing coordinator will be accountable to and supported by the elected leadership of CWA Local 7799 and responsible for implementing programs as directed by the leadership and democratic all-membership votes.
As organizing coordinator you will be expected to coordinate with the elected leadership of the local; mentor and manage staff to grow the union’s membership numbers and member involvement;; develop organizing for the Local; coordinate with the national union to secure resources for the Local; coordinate the Local’s communications; work with Local staff and union members to develop trainings and workshops, develop and execute plans for issue campaigns; coordinate the Local’s legislative and political program.
Responsibilities:
- Overall: Lead efforts in new growth, union campaign strategy, staff management, legislative campaigns, and internal/external communications for the local.
- Coordinate the implementation of CWA’s organizing and political programs and all other Local 7799 programs and campaigns among members and non-members.
- Mentor and manage the team of staff organizers to coordinate efforts across the local and covered workplaces, including working side-by-side local organizers and members in the field to support organizing efforts
- Coordinate with campaign teams to developing strategy and support for canvassing campaigns, issue campaigns and calls to action, committees, caucuses and working groups, including use of Action Network and other digital tools to track engagement and measure the impact of campaigns
- Coordinate the Local’s communications program, including developing and maintaining a robust social media presence and regular news, ensuring consistent and strategic communication with members.
- Conduct 1:1 phone or in-person conversations with new organizing leads across Colorado to recruit and integrate new units.
To meet the diverse needs of organizing our membership, you will be asked to work irregular and sometimes long hours, including early mornings, late evenings and occasional weekends. Your essential functions also include significant walking, including stairs; prolonged standing; occasionally carrying materials or other containers weighing up to thirty pounds for significant distances; significant driving, including intercity and night driving; frequent need to communicate in person, via writing, via telephone, and via regular computer use.
The person hired for this job should bring these attributes:
- 5 years or more of organizing experience, ideally in both pre-majority, internal organizing and collective bargaining settings
- Experience managing and supervising staff
- Experience bargaining with a staff union
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends
- Strong commitment to social justice and the labor movement
- Written and verbal communication skills, such as:
- Empathic listener
- Persuasive Speaker/Strong Presentation Skills
- Proven adaptability to differing cultural environments
- Enjoy working as a team member as well as independently
- Proficient with technology including but not limited to Action Network, social media platforms, Slack, Word, Zoom, Excel, Google suite, email, text messaging, Canva Pro, and/or the ability and willingness to learn these platforms
- Ability to work as team member, as well as take individual initiative with minimal supervision
- Driver’s license and reliable access to transportation
- Willing to develop skills in supporting leadership development and maintaining constructive relations with the staff union
- Willingness to travel frequently across the state of Colorado, and most often in the Denver Metro Area.
- Bilingual abilities a plus
This position is a management position excluded from the staff contract. The individual hired for this position must be able to start in early-mid January 2025.
