Grocery and Retail Worker Organizer

LAANE is seeking a Worker Organizer with a commitment to social justice to join our Retail and Grocery team.

Campaign Description: Our team partners with United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 770 to ensure that retail and grocery workers have access to good quality jobs.

Position Responsibilities: Under the supervision of LAANE’s OrganizingDirector, the Worker Organizer will engage non-union retail and grocery workers, recruit, mobilize, develop leaders and activists in the retail industry, contribute to retail worker organizing strategy and help build capacity by developingworker leader committees atmajor grocery stores based in the LA Area. This position will work directly with the Organizing director, LAANE's Grocery Campaign as well as another worker organizer. This position will also have a wide range of duties, which may vary according to the needs of the campaign. This requires extensive time in the field.Driving is required, reliable transportation is needed. Bilingual fluency in Spanish is required.

Qualifications:

  • A strong and demonstrated commitment to social, racial and economic justice and the labor movement.
  • At least 2 years of organizing work history with apreference for experience in labor and/or worker center and/or base-building organizations/campaigns.
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying leaders, recruiting, mobilizing and leadership development by motivating and inspiring worksite leaders to take action and build a strong activist base.
  • Familiarity with local and state labor laws including worksite health and safety preferred, as well as, helping workers navigate and address violation at the worksite
  • Experience working collaboratively with persons of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic status, ages, and sexual orientations.
  • Able to navigate around sensitive issues in a mature and respectful manner
  • Ability to work independently and collectively within a team, possession of strong interpersonal communication skills. Willingness to work longer hours and weekends when necessary.

Terms of Employment: This is a full-time, salaried position. The LAANE entry level salary is $68,000. The LAANE senior staff salary is $69,000. The hiring committee will make an offer that is dependent on experience and qualifications. LAANE offers 100% Employer Paid Family Medical, Dental and Vision, and a 401(k). LAANE is a qualified federal student loan forgiveness employer.

Generous paid time off including 12 personal days, 8 observed holidays, and 3 floating holidays each year. LAANE has a paid, two week winter break at the end of each year. Employees can accrue up to 20 vacation days and 12 sick days. After 5 years of work, all staff are eligible to apply for 3 months of paid sabbatical leave.

The position is not a 9 to 5 job; it does require work on nights and weekends, as well as an expectation to support LAANE’s broader work in ‘all hands on deck’ actions. We are a proud union employer. This position is a bargaining unit position.
